ENG vs IRE, only Test – where to watch live: TV channels & live streaming | England v Ireland 2023

The English Test summer is back as Ireland visit Lords ahead of a hotly anticipated Ashes series: here is where to watch the England v Ireland Test match live, including TV channel and live streaming details for ENG vs IRE 2023.

Surprise debutant Josh Tongue will be under the microscope as he makes his international bow for England this weekend, as well as the highly scrutinised Zak Crawley and the returning Jonny Bairstow. England named their starting XI two days ahead of the game, with James Anderson and Ollie Robinson missing out nursing injuries.

It will be Ireland’s fourth Test in less than two months after their tours to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Andrew Balbirnie recently admitted that Ireland’s upcoming World Cup Qualifiers against Italy, despite being played in Scotland in front of a handful of people, is far more critical than the one-off Test match.

James Vince becomes Blast’s leading run-scorer but Will Jacks spoils his night

James Vince became the Vitality Blast’s all-time leading run-scorer but Will Jacks spoiled his night with 83 not out off 57 deliveries as Surrey beat Hampshire by six wickets.

Vince overtook former Sussex star Luke Wright to reach 5,054 runs in 169 matches with a superlative 88 off 56 balls not out as Hampshire totted up 156 for four.

But Jacks smashed eight sixes in an incredible riposte as Surrey extended their unbeaten run, going back to 2015, over Hampshire to 11 matches.

For Surrey, it got them back to winning ways after defeat to Sussex Sharks, while defending champions Hampshire have lost two of their first three matches.

Chris Cooke’s maiden century in the competition led the onslaught as Glamorgan beat Middlesex by 29 runs at Merchant Taylors’ School.

Cooke smashed 113 not out in 41 balls with seven sixes, moving from 50 to 100 in just 12 balls, as the Welsh visitors piled up 238 for three, with Colin Ingram also unbeaten on 92 from 51 deliveries.

Stephen Eskinazi (59) and Joe Cracknell put on an opening stand of 146 in 12 overs for Middlesex but the chase petered out following their dismissals as they finished on 209 for five.

Rob Yates’ T20 best 71 off 53 balls, plus Sam Hain’s unbeaten 48 off 27 deliveries propelled Birmingham Bears to 202 for six in a 21-run win over Northamptonshire Steelbacks at Wantage Road.

Craig Miles then took four for 29 as the Steelbacks were restricted to 181 for seven in their reply, with Ricardo Vasconcelos’ 65 off 39 balls the only score of consequence.

Ben Stokes does not fear for future of Test cricket amid Ashes excitement

Ben Stokes does not fear for future of Test cricket amid Ashes excitement

England captain Ben Stokes can feel the excitement building ahead of the Ashes and is in no doubt over the long-term future of Test cricket.

Stokes’ side begin their summer of red-ball assignments on Thursday when they face Ireland in a four-day Test at Lord’s.

Eyebrows were raised ahead of the Ashes precursor when Ireland left out star bowler Josh Little, with the seamer ordered to rest after a successful Indian Premier League spell with runners-up Gujarat Titans ahead of next month’s 50-over World Cup qualification tournament.

Cricket Ireland’s high performance director Richard Holdsworth defended their decision by insisting the Lord’s Test was not a “pinnacle event” to draw further concerns over the future of international red-ball cricket with more and more franchise leagues filling the cricket calendar.

Ben Stokes is excited for the upcoming Ashes series

Stokes, who admitted he can understand Holdsworth’s comments, said: “I’ve always been a huge advocate of the Test format.

“The whole landscape and the whole game of cricket is literally just changing in front of everyone’s eyes so quickly.

“I see T20 and Test cricket being able to keep being successful and progress side by side.

“Look at what T20 has done for the game in general, the amount of attraction it’s brought – new fans, new players its brought into playing cricket regardless of the format and also what T20 has been able to bring in terms of Test cricket.

“The transition between the two games is so different but at certain periods in Test matches you do see that T20 side come out, which is only because the players have been playing it.

“So, I don’t see a world where T20 and Tests aren’t being played in the future.

“I don’t know what this build-up period before the Ashes is like compared to 2005, no idea, but it’s very hard to ignore and not be able to see the excitement.”

England’s aggressive ‘Bazball’ style has helped them put Test cricket at the forefront of the conversation over the past 12 months.

After winning 10 of their 12 matches since Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum took over the red-ball team last May, all eyes are on what England can achieve when the stakes are at its highest this summer after they have hit conventional thinking for six during the past year.

England scored at 5.50 runs an over to post 506 for four on day one in Rawalpindi during the 3-0 series win in Pakistan.

Asked if a 500-run day in the Ashes is possible, Stokes replied: “Be alright, wouldn’t it? Anything is possible I think if you have the backing to go out and do it.

“The thing about letting guys go out and be free and stuff like that is that you just don’t know where their ability ends, if that makes sense.

“I think what we have seen over the last year is that the same players who have been playing for a while go to a lot higher in terms of their potential and them understanding they might be better than they thought they were. I think that is totally down to the mindset switch.”

Stokes’ own preparation for this enormous summer was spent in India at the IPL, but he only played twice and bowled one over.

However, the 31-year-old has viewed his “John Terry role” as a “blessing in disguise” with the spell with eventual-champions Chennai Super Kings time well spent after he worked on his batting and managed his workload.

He feels the latter will be key to ensuring he is able to play a full role with the ball when Australia rock up at Edgbaston for the Ashes opener.

“The knee is in a much better place than it was in Wellington,” Stokes reflected.

“I’ve been in India for the IPL over the last nine to 10 weeks but what I have done is get myself into a position where I am not able to look back and regret or say I have not given myself the best opportunity to play a full role with the ball this summer.”

James Anderson, who along with Ollie Robinson is being rested for this Test, was also referenced as a template for Stokes to follow throughout the Ashes with his energy set to be spent bowling on the field, rather than in training.

“Jimmy’s an unbelievable example of being able to manage his workload and everything he does away from it, then obviously he’s been delivering for years out on the field,” Stokes said.

Explained: Why England have picked newbie Josh Tongue over Lord’s master Chris Woakes for the Ireland Test

Explained: Why England have picked newbie Josh Tongue over Lord’s master Chris Woakes for the Ireland Test
Explained: Why England Have Picked Newbie Josh Tongue Over Lord's Master Chris Woakes For The Ireland Test

England have picked uncapped seamer Josh Tongue for the first Test of the summer at Lord’s which starts tomorrow (June 1), with Chris Woakes left out of the starting XI for the pre-Ashes clash.

Woakes hasn’t played a Test match for England since March last year when he took three wickets against the West Indies in Grenada. Since then, he missed the entirety of the 2022 home summer with a cartilage injury in his left knee, before returning to England’s white-ball squads this winter. He was part of England’s T20 World Cup winning squad in Australia, as well as their ODI tours of South Africa and Bangladesh.

Tongue was called up to the England squad last week amid several injury concerns for England’s fast-bowling unit. Jofra Archer and Olly Stone have both already been ruled out of the summer’s action while Ollie Robinson and James Anderson are both nursing injuries. Mark Wood’s workload is also being managed ahead of the high-intensity summer and he has returned home to spend time with his family after the birth of his second child.

bet365

Of the bowlers left in England’s squad to face Ireland, that left Stuart Broad, Matthew Potts, Tongue and Woakes from which England could make up a pace-bowling group. Of the three England selected in their starting XI, Woakes was the one to miss out.

On the face of it, the decision to leave out Woakes – who has a brilliant record at Lord’s – in favour of an unknown entity in Tongue could be seen as puzzling. While he has fallen out of favour in Test matches away from home recently, Woakes is undoubtedly a premier option in English conditions.

Since the beginning of 2021, he has taken 40 wickets at 21.70 in Test matches in England. At Lord’s in particular, he is a master. His career stats at the ground read 27 wickets in five Tests at an average of 11.33, with three five-fors and a ten-for. He also averages 61 at Lord’s with the bat, with his sole Test hundred coming at the prestigious venue. In the previous Ireland Test match at Lord’s, again preceding an Ashes four years ago, Woakes took six wickets as the visitors collapsed to 38 all out in the fourth innings.

But, while Woakes would undoubtedly have been an asset for England against an inexperienced Ireland side, scratch the surface and his exclusion begins to make more sense.

It’s not hard to imagine that one of Anderson or Robinson won’t be fit for the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston, and it seems almost a foregone conclusion that they will not be able to make it through all five Tests against Australia. It is also unlikely that Wood will play consistently throughout the summer. While Potts’ fitness seems more robust (currently) that leaves England with just Broad and Woakes left to rotate through. Taking all of this into consideration, Tongue playing at least a small part in England’s Ashes campaign looks increasingly likely.

Ben Stokes conceded as much in an interview with BBC Sport on Wednesday: “We see this as a great opportunity to see someone like Josh Tongue go out and play in a Test,” he said. “We might need someone like him throughout the summer. It gives me an opportunity to see what his character is like and what he is like to operate with as a captain. Woakesy completely understood that.

“We know Woakesy is a very experienced player and what he will offer this team when he plays.”

Woakes is a highly experienced Test and international bowler, who himself made his debut in a (dead-rubber) Ashes Test ten years ago. Parachuting Tongue in to make his debut in an Ashes series, without a Test already under his belt, is a different scenario than asking Woakes to play his first Test in over a year during a high-profile series.

In an effort to avoid Tongue becoming the latest in a long line of Ashes debutants consigned to scrapheap after a difficult initiation, the Ireland debut makes sense. Also, as Stokes said, a low-stakes game for both sides gives Stokes and McCullum a look at how good Tongue is at the minute, as well as what his ceiling could be.

So, while Woakes’ return will have to wait a little longer and there will be no magical Lord’s return for its maestro on this occasion, there is method behind what, on the face of it, looks like madness.

Watch: Babar Azam Carves Composed Fifty On International Debut

Watch: Eight years ago in Lahore, a 20-year-old named Babar Azam made his first international outing, striking a measured half-century against a touring Zimbabwe side.

Babar was called up for the last fixture of the tour in which Pakistan carried out a whitewash series victory over The Chevrons, across three ODIs and two T20Is.

After Mohammad Hafeez and then-captain Azhar Ali’s 115-run opening stand got Pakistan off to a solid start, a fresh-faced Babar strolled to the crease with Pakistan 135-2 at the halfway mark.

bet365

As the middle-order around him looked in danger of squandering the base set for them earlier, a quintessentially cool-headed Babar remained resolute as he built his maiden international innings.

Babar reached 50 off 54 balls in the 45th over, with just four boundaries hit in the process, but crucially remaining at the crease – while the likes of Asad Shafiq and Sarfaraz Ahmed had fallen while risk-taking.

Babar would fall after being bowled by Chris Mpofu, helping his side to 296-6 from their 50 overs. Zimbabwe made a flying start to the chase, racing to 68 without loss from nine overs, before the rain came.

Babar’s mature debut knock would earn him a spot on the return tour of Zimbabwe later that year, before becoming a mainstay in the Pakistan squad. The rest is history.

Since then, the prolific skipper has appeared in 100 ODIs, averaging just shy of 60 – becoming the fastest ODI batter to reach 5,000 runs – leading Pakistan to the top of the ODI rankings for the first time in the process.

Watch the highlights from Babar Azam’s 54 from 60 balls on international debut here:

England captain Ben Stokes unconcerned over ability to bowl in the Ashes

England captain Ben Stokes unconcerned over ability to bowl in the Ashes

England captain Ben Stokes has no concerns over his ability to bowl in this summer’s Ashes.

Stokes’ long-standing left knee issue caused him problems during February’s tour of New Zealand and his recent time at the Indian Premier League proved fruitless.

All-rounder Stokes played only twice for Chennai Super Kings and sent down just one over for 18 runs during his IPL stint but ahead of this week’s one-off Test with Ireland at Lord’s, the 31-year-old is confident he can have an impact when the Ashes begins on June 16.

He said: “Yeah, look the knee is in much better place than it was in Wellington.

“I’ve been over in India for the IPL and these last eight or nine weeks I know I have got myself in a position where I can’t say I regret anything.

“I have got myself into a place where I feel like in a 2019, 2020 space in terms of my own body and fitness. I have definitely given myself the best opportunity (to bowl this summer).

“We know what it is (the problem) and now it is about managing it.”

IPL 2023, updated dot ball count: How many tree saplings have been planted so far?

IPL 2023, updated dot ball count: How many tree saplings have been planted so far?
IPL 2023, Dot Ball Count: How Many Tree Saplings Have Been Planted So Far?

Almost 100,000 tree saplings have been planted as a result of the BCCI’s green initiative, which is running a campaign throughout the four IPL 2023 playoff matches and is based on the number of dot balls bowled.

During Qualifier 1 between Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans on Monday (May 22), it was announced on air that the BCCI had partnered with the Tata Group to launch a tree-planting campaign for the final week of the tournament.

For every dot ball bowled in the four playoff matches, 500 trees will be planted across India. In tandem with this, the dot ball markers on the TV coverage of the tournament have also been changed to tree symbols.

bet365

In the first qualifier, when CSK sealed their place in Sunday’s final, 84 dot balls were bowled, resulting in 42,000 tree saplings being planted. In the Eliminator match between Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans, 96 dot balls were bowled as Lucknow Super Giants were bowled out for 101 by Mumbai Indians – meaning 48,000 trees were planted.

During his stunning five-wicket-haul, Akash Madhwal bowled 17 dot deliveries out of 21 he bowled in the match. This means Madhwal’s spell alone was responsible for 8,500 tree saplings being planted.

At the end of the Eliminator match, the dot ball count stood at 68, amounting to a total of 34,000. The total tally before the final, hence, stood at 124,000.

The final was a reduced affair, with rain taking away five of the overs. Chennai Super Kings bowled 27 dots, a list headed by Maheesh Theekshana (8) and Matheesha Pathirana (7).

Chennai needed to chase 171 in 15 overs, which resulted in fewer dots during their innings. The Gujarat Titans still managed 19 dot balls, of which Noor Ahmad bowled six and Mohammed Shami five.

Across the four playoffs, thus, there were 294 dot balls. This will result in the planting of 147,000 saplings.

World Cup Qualifier against Italy ‘far more important’ than Lord’s Test against England, says Ireland captain Andrew Balbirnie

World Cup Qualifier against Italy ‘far more important’ than Lord’s Test against England, says Ireland captain Andrew Balbirnie

Ireland captain Andrew Balbirnie has admitted his side’s World Cup Qualifiers are “far more important” than their upcoming Test Match against England.

Balbirnie’s side will play their second Lord’s Test match, and just their seventh ever in the format, in the first game of the England international summer on Thursday.

Despite the rarity of such an occasion, Ireland’s Performance Director Richard Holdsworth said the Test is not a “pinnacle event” as he also focused on qualifying campaigns for the 50-over and T20 World Cups in 2023 and 2024 respectively.

bet365

One of the country’s leading seamers, Josh Little, will accordingly be rested for the game after remaining in the IPL to play the final with Gujarat Titans as Ireland look to keep him fit for two potentially vital campaigns later this summer.

“We’re going to be playing a Qualifier in Scotland in front of maybe 30 people against Italy, and it’s going to be far more important than the Test match,” Balbirnie told ESPNcricinfo.

“I don’t want that to sound disrespectful to England or the ECB because we’re going to do our absolute best to try to get a result, and it’s an honour to play at Lord’s against England – but it’s a one-off Test in the middle of the summer.”

The 32-year-old, who knows Lord’s well after playing for Middlesex earlier in his career, felt England may take a similar approach to the Test, as he added: “The Ashes is their most important thing. I’d imagine they’ll be looking at this as a glorified warm-up.

“If we get bowled out for 30 in both innings against England but qualify for both World Cups, that’s a win; that’s our most successful summer ever. I hope that doesn’t happen, but World Cups are where we get our most publicity on the world stage and back home – particularly for a tournament in India and what that brings.”

Ireland will fly to Bulawayo after the Test to play in a Qualifier for this autumn’s World Cup. They will compete with Sri Lanka, West Indies, USA, the Netherlands, Nepal, Zimbabwe, Oman, Scotland and the UAE for the final two spots in the tournament, which will take place in India.

They will then travel to Scotland for T20 World Cup Qualifiers, with games against Italy, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Jersey, and Scotland.

While it’s significance to the future of Irish cricket may be low compared to the prospect of appearing at two major ICC tournaments, the Lord’s Test will give Ireland a chance to improve their record in the format after losing all six of their games to date.

They were beaten 2-0 in Sri Lanka earlier this year but did make strides with the bat, posting 492 in the first innings of the second Test thanks to hundreds from Paul Stirling and Curtis Campher.

Ireland did bowl England out for 85 on the first morning of their only previous Test meeting in 2019, but still lost after making just 38 in the fourth innings.

From Rinku Singh’s extraordinary heist to Jadeja’s endgame: Every last-ball finish at IPL 2023

From Rinku Singh’s extraordinary heist to Jadeja’s endgame: Every last-ball finish at IPL 2023

The IPL 2023 final saw one of the most spectacular finishes to a tournament in recent memory, with Ravindra Jadeja hitting the final two balls of Chennai Super Kings’ chase for six and four to seal CSK’s fifth IPL title against the Gujarat Titans.

It was the 10th time in this year’s tournament a game had been decided on the final ball of the game, with Gujarat on the losing side in three of them.

From Rinku Singh’s extraordinary onslaught to Jadeja’s title-clinching boundaries, here are all the last-ball finishes at IPL 2023

bet365

IPL 2023: Every last ball finish in this year’s Indian Premier League

Kolkata Knight Riders beat Gujarat Titans by three wickets, Match 13

KKR faced an uphill battle throughout their chase after Vijay Shankar’s 63 from 24 balls lifted the Titans to 204-5, and victory looked a long way off when Mohammad Shami bowled a tight 18th over that left them needing 43 off of 12 balls.

The equation was soon 39 from eight, but then Rinku Singh hit the final two balls of Josh Little’s over for four and six.

After regaining the strike on the first  ball of the last over, Singh hit Yash Dayal for an extraordinary five sixes off the final five balls, taking Kolkata to a remarkable three-wicket win.

Lucknow Super Giants beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by one wicket, Match 15

Lucknow were cruising in their chase of 212 when Nicholas Pooran fell for 62 from just 19 deliveries, with 24 needed from three overs and four wickets in hand.

It was even simpler 12 balls later, with five needed from the last over and Lucknow seven down . Having gone for 44 off his first three overs, Harshal Patel produced an excellent final over, taking two wickets and going for just four runs off his first five balls to leave the score level with one ball remaining.

Avesh Khan then missed the final ball, but scampered through for a bye after Dinesh Karthik fumbled the ball to complete a victory that had looked much more straightforward a few minutes earlier.

Mumbai Indians beat Delhi Capitals by six wickets, Match 16

With both sides chasing their first win of the tournament, Mumbai came into final over with six wickets in hand and five needed to beat Delhi’s 172.

Anrich Nortje, whose previous three overs had cost 30, found his form at the death and should have had a wicket with his second ball as Tim David was dropped at midwicket.

The South African conceded just three from the first five balls but missed his yorker off the last, allowing David to punt it out to long off and scramble back for a tight second.

Rajasthan Royals beat Chennai Super Kings by three runs, Match 17

Chasing 21 from a final over is a big ask, but few would have ruled Chennai out with the ultra-experienced pair of MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja at the crease.

Sandeep Sharma did CSK a bit of a favour by starting with two wides, and the tide looked to have turned after Dhoni got the crowd up with two sixes that left the equation at seven from three.

Sharma held his nerve, though, ending the game with three balls for three runs. His last delivery was an excellent yorker, which the CSK captain could only hit for a single when five were needed to win.

Punjab Kings beat Chennai Super Kings by four wickets, Match 41

CSK were involved in another tight finish two weeks later, after Devon Conway’s 92 propelled them up to 200-4.

The Kings just about kept up with the rate throughout as five of the top six passed 20, leaving them with nine needed off the last six balls.

Despite not finding the boundary, Sikandar Raza and Shakrukh Khan ran hard and ended up needing three of the final delivery, which they managed after Raza squeezed a short ball towards the square leg boundary.

Delhi Capitals beat Gujarat Titans by five runs, Match 44

In an unusually low-scoring game, Delhi’s excellent bowling performance gave them a good chance of defending 130, with the Titans reeling at 98-5 after 18 overs.

Rahul Tewatia then brought the game to life with three sixes in a row off Anrich Nortje’s 19th over, leaving Gujarat needing 12 from the last over.

Ishant Sharma showed his class as he dismissed Tewatia, and left the visitors needing six to tie off the last ball. He missed his yorker and bowled an inviting full toss, but Rashid Khan could only slice it over backwards point for a single.

Kolkata Knight Riders beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by five runs, Match 47

While it tends to be batters that make their name in final ball wins, a tight final over can make just as big a difference as a Rinku Singh-esque onslaught.

A stop-start chase for the Sunrisers left them needing nine to win from the final over in their chase, of 171, albeit with just three wickets in hand.

Varun Chakravarthy then went for just two runs off the bat in his final over, while also having Abdul Samad caught at deep mid-wicket. With six needed off the final ball, the mystery spinner dropped short but Bhuveneshwar Kumar failed to make contact.

Sunrisers Hyderabad beat Rajasthan Royals by four wickets, Match 52

Perhaps the most dramatic finish in this year’s IPL came as the Sunrisers chased 217 against Rajasthan.

After contributions from each of the top four, Hyderabad were left needing 16 from Sandeep Sharma’s final over. It started well with eight runs from the first two balls, but soon they needed five off one after a tight response from the bowler.

He looked to have won the game when Abdul Samad was caught at long off, but the tide turned again as Sharma had overstepped and had to bowl the final delivery again. Samad made no mistake the second time, hitting a straight six to secure a gutting loss for Rajasthan.

Kolkata Knight Riders beat Punjab Kings by five wickets,  Match 53

If you are going to chase a steep total in the last few overs of an IPL game, Rinku Singh and Andre Russell are a handy pair to have at the crease.

They needed 26 from the last 12 balls, but three sixes from Russell off Sam Curran tilted the game in KKR’s favour as they went into the final over.

With six needed off the last over, it looks as though Kolkata have thrown it away when Russell is run out of the penultimate ball with two runs still needed. Singh had got himself back on strike, though, and cracked the last delivery over fine leg for four to complete another nerveless finish from the 25-year-old.

Chennai Super Kings beat Gujarat Titans by five wickets, IPL final

Fans were made to wait for the IPL’s final result after rain meant the game didn’t finish until almost 2am on the reserve day, but the quality of the finish all but made up for it.

Chasing a revised target of 171, Chennai went into the final over 13 runs away from a fifth IPL title, with Ravindra Jadeja and Shivam Dube at the crease.

It started badly, with just three runs from the first four balls, but then Jadeja lifted Mohit Sharma over his head for six from the penultimate ball, shifting the momentum back in his side’s favour.

The next ball was into the pads, and flicked comfortably away for four by Jadeja, who sealed the IPL trophy in the process.
