Player of the match Alice Capsey was not surprised by the impact of England debutant Mahika Gaur after the teenage pair helped secure victory in a rain-affected T20 opener against Sri Lanka at Hove.

The hosts clinched a 1-0 lead in the three-match series thanks to a 12-run success on the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method.

Capsey, 19, hit a blistering half-century to help England post 186 for four in a innings reduced to 17 overs due to a delayed start.

Sri Lanka had reached 23-0 from 3.1 overs in reply when play was halted for almost 45 minutes by a further downpour, before being set a revised target of 68 from six overs – 45 more from 17 balls.

Fast bowler Gaur then marked her maiden cap by claiming the wicket of opposition skipper Chamari Athapaththu, who was caught by Amy Jones, to help England over the line.

“We’ve all got along with her really well,” Capsey said of 17-year-old Gaur.

“She’s fitted in perfectly, she’s just a really good human. She’s just someone who doesn’t take too much fuss.

“She gets on with it, she works really hard and I’m not surprised how well she went out there and bowled today.

“It was probably a different role to what she was expecting, having to go to her death overs pretty quickly, but she took that role on really well and it shows her character.”

Capsey smashed 51 off just 27 balls, including five fours and three sixes, to equal her highest T20I score.

England had raced out of the blocks and were 50 without loss at the end of four overs after the start of the match was pushed back by an hour because of wet weather.

Danni Wyatt contributed 48, while fellow opener Maia Bouchier made 22, captain Heather Knight chipped in with 23 and Freya Kemp added 20.

Capsey admits England’s players were becoming “a bit itchy” as the prospect of a washout became a genuine threat.

“I don’t think I was thinking too much about my 50, I was thinking more about getting the win,” she said.

“We did the first half of the job really well. I thought Danni Wyatt at the top of the order did brilliantly and then cameos from Heather and Freya, who just kept the momentum going and really finished the game off well for us.

“We knew it was only half the job done. It was a bit frustrating coming off after 3.1 overs and we knew there was a cut off time so I think everyone was getting a bit itchy to get back out there.

“It was nice we were able to. We were put under pressure, which is what we wanted, and it was really nice to see how the team came back from that – it was a really good performance for us.”

The sides will meet again on Saturday afternoon at Chelmsford ahead of a finishing the series on Wednesday at Derby.

Provisional England World Cup place ‘extremely satisfying’ for Dawid Malan

Dawid Malan admitted his relief at making England’s provisional World Cup squad.

The Yorkshire batter struck a half-century in the seven-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first T20 on Wednesday.

Malan made 54 off 42 balls as England chased 140 with 36 deliveries to spare after pacemen Brydon Carse and Luke Wood took three wickets apiece to restrict the tourists to 139 for nine at Chester-le-Street.

With England having so much strength in depth these days, Malan was delighted to be in his country’s white-ball plans.

He said: “(It was) definitely relief, you look at the amount of depth we’ve got in English cricket, especially having sacrificed so many tournaments over the last couple of years to get in this World Cup squad, to get the call was extremely satisfying.

“I know there are people who’ve missed out and I have so much sympathy for them. From a personal point of view I was exceptionally pleased to get that call because I felt I’ve worked really hard to get in that squad.

“Every opportunity I’ve been given in 50 overs in my last four or five series I’ve gone and had to score the runs, doing it the tough way to get in there.

“Especially the top three, I know people compare me to Brooky (Harry Brook), but I bat top three and he bats four, five, six, so I don’t know where that comparison comes from.

“To be able to push for a place in that World Cup squad and get the call was extremely satisfying.”

England’s white-ball preparations for the World Cup continue after the New Zealand series with three ODIs against Ireland in September before flying out to India for the 50-over tournament which begins in October.

After his omission from the provisional World Cup squad, Harry Brook showed off his heavy hitting at the Riverside with 43 not out from 27 balls and Malan is determined to keep scoring in order to claim his spot for India.

“I think you always have to score runs when you play international cricket, especially when you have the depth we do here,” he added.

“It’s a provisional squad but from my understanding it’s up to us to score runs to stay in it.

“I think it would be tough, two weeks before we are flying, especially with people potentially resting for the Ireland series, to suddenly lose their place.

“But that is cricket and that’s the way life goes. Nothing is ever guaranteed until you stand on that plane.

“I try my best to score runs- that’s what I’m picked for, to score runs and win games. I am not there to please anyone, I’m there to score runs for Jos (Buttler) and (Matthew) Motty and contribute to wins.

“I feel like I have done that consistently over the last five or six years, whatever it is in white-ball cricket.”

Watch: Pakistan registered a 238-run victory over Nepal in the first match of the 2023 Asia Cup in Multan yesterday (August 30).

The men’s Asia Cup returned to Pakistan after 15 long years as the hosts played Nepal in the tournament opener of the 16th edition. Pakistan won the toss and chose to bat, with Nepal playing their first match ever in the tournament.

However, Pakistan got off to a shaky start when they lost both openers within 25 runs. Imam-ul-Haq was run out for five, while Fakhar Zaman was caught behind for 14.

Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan then stitched together an 86-run partnership for the third wicket, stabilising the innings, before Babar was joined at the crease by the explosive Iftikhar Ahmed.

The former reached his 19th ODI century and became the fastest batter to do so, while the latter first took his time to get his eye in and then accelerated, scoring 56 runs off his last 26 balls as Pakistan added 114 in their last eight overs. Iftikhar reached his maiden international century in the process, one that could help Pakistan find answers to their middle-order questions.

Chasing a stiff target of 343, Nepal were rocked early. They lost their top three within the first two overs as Shaheen Afridi continued his new-ball wicket-taking tradition, picking two wickets in the very first over of the innings.

Aarif Sheikh and Sompal Kami showed some fight, adding 69 runs for the fourth wicket, but weren’t able to hold their nerves for long. Once the fourth wicket fell at the score of 73, the floodgates opened.

Shadab Khan ran through the lower order, picking four wickets for 27 runs as Nepal were all out for 104, handing Pakistan the second-biggest victory in Asia Cup history.

After both batters ended up at the same end in the 41st over of the Bangladesh innings, Mehidy Hasan Miraz left his crease to allow Najmul Hossain Shanto to make his ground before him. Here’s why.

Batting first in their opening game of the 2023 Asia Cup, Bangladesh seemed to be going nowhere as none of their batters except Shanto could come to terms with the slowness of the Pallekele surface. At the end of 36 overs, their score read 140-5, with Shanto on 75 off 109 balls and Mehidy on five off nine.

The last thing Bangladesh needed at that point was a run out. However, not only did they enforce a run out on themselves, but they did so in the most embarrassing manner, with both batters running towards the same end.

Mehidy tucked a length ball from Kasun Rajitha onto the leg side and took a step forward. That seemed to be enough of an indication for Shanto, who was at the non-striker’s end, as he took off for a run. Mehidy, however, backed out of it, resulting in both batters running towards the same end.

With the pitch being difficult to score off, it was imperative for Bangladesh that their set batter stayed in the middle for as long as possible. After Shanto, the next highest scorer in the top six for Bangladesh was Towhid Hridoy, who had taken 41 balls to score 20, and had not managed to find the fence once. Shanto, batting on 75, held the key to Bangladesh’s chances in the game. Fortunately for them, Mehidy realised this in the nick of time.

Dhananjaya de Silva fielded and threw the ball calmly to Rajitha at the non-striker’s who had come back from his follow-through to collect the throw. By the time he took off the bails, Mehidy had willingly wandered out of his crease, allowing Shanto to cross him and jog safely through the crease.

According to law 38.4 of the Laws of Cricket which deals with which batter is out during a run out, “The one whose ground is at the end where the wicket is broke” is the batter who is supposed to be dismissed.

In this instance, when the wicket at the non-striker’s end was broken, Shanto was the only batter inside the crease at the striker’s end, making the striker’s end his ‘ground’, which, in turn, made the non-striker’s end Mehidy’s ‘ground’. Consequently, after a brief check with the third umpire, Mehidy was given out.

While Mehidy’s intentions behind his sacrifice made sense, unfortunately for Bangladesh, Shanto could only add 14 more runs to his tally before being dismissed by a Maheesh Theekshana beauty.

Bangladesh could only manage to reach 164, and despite a late fightback from their bowlers towards the end of Sri Lanka’s chase, they weren’t able to defend it and succumbed to a five-wicket defeat.

Bowler Brydon Carse insists it has “always been a number one focus” to play cricket for England after his key performance in the first Vitality T20 International against New Zealand.

The Durham quick took three wickets for 23 runs as England charged to a seven-wicket victory in the first game of their white-ball series.

Dawid Malan and Harry Brook chased down the 140 target, scoring 54 and 43 respectively to give England the advantage going into the second T20 at Old Trafford on Friday.

Carse was a late replacement in the 20-over squad for the New Zealand series, replacing the injured John Turner, and despite dealing with injuries himself in recent times, he insists that playing for England remains a priority.

“Over the last year I’ve had massive ambitions to play for England,” Carse told a press conference.

“I was unfortunate in the winter to pick up an injury and it’s always been my number one focus to try and play for England again.

“With the amount of white-ball cricket in all the different leagues around the world at the moment players have got a lot of opportunity to play a lot of cricket.

“I think it just comes down to what your ambition is, what you want to do as a cricketer. I’ve still got a lot of ambition to play red-ball cricket and to play Test cricket for England.”

It was a welcome homecoming at the Riverside for Carse, who earned his first T20 international scalp for England after bowling Finn Allen.

He struck again in the final over, picking up the wickets of Ish Sodhi and Adam Milne and Carse admitted there was plenty of excitement when he found out he had been selected to play on home turf.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better start,” Carse added. “When I got the news from Jos (Buttler) yesterday afternoon that I’d be playing there was a lot of excitement to play at Durham, where I’ve played my cricket over the last nine years.

“So a lot of familiar faces and a lot of familiar surroundings, it probably just made me that little more relaxed coming into the game.”

Unphased by his omission from the provisional 50-over World Cup squad, Brook played a key part alongside Malan in getting England over the line with 36 balls to spare and Carse admitted the Yorkshire batter is “a joy to watch”.

He said: “I’m glad I haven’t had to play against him in the last 18 months because he’s either been for England or in the Hundred with me – so far it’s been okay!

“He just seems to be hitting it all around the ground and the tempo he’s batting at, it’s great for him and for English cricket to be honest.

“He’s been unbelievable, I’m fortunate enough to spend quite a bit of time with Harry on and off the field as well, I get on well with him.

“To see him go about his business over the last 18 months has been a joy to watch, he’s such a laid back character in and around training, he loves batting.”

England ease to seven-wicket win in T20 opener against New Zealand

England got their Vitality T20 International series off to a winning start after beating New Zealand by seven wickets in the first game at Chester-le-Street.

In their first 20-over contest since the whitewash defeat to Bangladesh in March, England got off to a flying start, taking three wickets in the powerplay.

Glenn Phillips top-scored for the visitors with 41 off 38 before falling to Luke Wood, who finished with three wickets alongside Durham quick Brydon Carse.

Although Jonny Bairstow was dismissed early on, Dawid Malan’s 54 off 42 balls put England in the driving seat along with Harry Brook’s unbeaten 43 off 27 balls, giving the hosts the advantage going into the second T20 at Old Trafford on Friday.

Despite being given an early scare when Finn Allen smashed three consecutive sixes off the first over, a change of ends in the fourth helped Wood kick off a dominant powerplay for England.

The Lancashire bowler took the first wicket of the evening as Devon Conway feathered behind to Jos Buttler and more wickets tumbled when Carse resumed from the Finchale End to earn his first T20 international scalp for England after clean-bowling Allen.

Wood struck again to send Tim Seifert’s bails flying as New Zealand were suddenly 38 for three after six overs.

Their woes continued when Moeen Ali clipped Mark Chapman’s off-stump in the eighth over but Phillips and Daryl Mitchell tried to regain control with some good running to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

Liam Livingstone ended the partnership, however, tempting Mitchell into looping the ball to long-off aiming for a six, but Brook was on the boundary to comfortably catch.

Phillips was the dominant batter at the crease looking to keep his foot on the gas, but he was beginning to run out of partners when Mitchell Santner sliced the ball straight to Wood off Adil Rashid.

Wood’s return in the 17th over saw Phillips eventually fall for 41 after Sam Curran made an excellent dive to his left.

Carse was handed the ball for the final over and ended Ish Sodhi and Adam Milne’s quickfire 26-run partnership, taking both of their wickets to finish with figures of three for 23.

Set 140 to chase, Bairstow opened the batting, smashing four off Tim Southee, but was caught out by the Black Caps captain as he edged to Mitchell at slip.

Aiming to capitalise on their positive start, Milne and Southee restricted England to singles but the introduction of Lockie Ferguson saw Will Jacks suddenly tee off, smashing back-to-back fours before thumping one into the stands for six.

Not to be outdone, Malan put away three consecutive fours off Santner and some more tidy running brought England to 61 for one at the end of the powerplay.

Sodhi struck in the seventh over when Jacks appeared to accidentally clip the ball with his bat twice allowing Allen to comfortably catch, but Malan instantly responded by belting a huge six over an outstretched Chapman at deep midwicket.

Not letting his omission from the provisional 50-over World Cup squad phase him, Brook dispatched two successive Sodhi deliveries into the stands and just after England reached the 100-run mark, Malan fired another ball into the crowd to bring up his 50.

Ferguson soon ended Malan’s heavy hitting with Mitchell catching the batter at mid-on, but Brook continued to put runs on the board before Livingstone put the game to bed in style with a huge six with 36 balls to spare.

Watch: Babar Azam brought up his 19th ODI century and became the fastest batter to the landmark in the Asia Cup 2023 opener against Nepal on August 30 at the Multan Cricket Stadium.

Batting first after winning the toss in the opening match of the 2023 Asia Cup, Pakistan got off to a poor start, losing both openers Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq inside seven overs.

Babar, playing his 104th ODI, stabilised the Pakistan innings with Mohammad Rizwan, who scored 44 off 50 balls, but Rizwan and Salman Agha fell in quick succession. At 124-4, Babar was joined by Iftikhar Ahmed.

The Pakistan captain reached fifty off 72 balls in the 28th over before switching gears. His next fifty runs came off 37 balls as he completed his hundred in the 42nd over, cutting Diepndra Airee‘s short ball to point for two.

In the process, he became the fastest batter in the history of ODI to 19 centuries in terms of innings. He has played 102 innings, two fewer than Hashim Amla’s record of 104.

This was also Babar’s third consecutive 50-plus score in ODIs: he had scored a half-century in each of the last two ODIs against Afghanistan.

Upon reaching his century, Babar pressed down hard on the accelerator. His next 22 balls fetched 51 runs and he was finally dismissed in the last over of the innings, having scored 151 off 131 balls, the second-highest individual score by a batter in the history of the men’s Asia Cup.

Pakistan eventually finished on 342-6. At the time of writing, Nepal were 27-3 in 5.1 overs.

Heather Knight calls equal match fees for England women ‘remarkable’ progress

England captain Heather Knight says she “barely got expenses” at the start of her career as she reflected on the “remarkable” progress of women’s cricket following the announcement of equal match fees.

Players for England women’s side will receive payment in line with the men’s team for international appearances with immediate effect.

Knight and her team-mates are set to benefit from the change for the first time on Thursday evening during the opening match of their Vitality IT20 series against Sri Lanka at Hove.

The 32-year-old admits she could not have envisaged pay parity with the men when she made her England debut in 2010.

“Not really, no,” she said. “I don’t think so.

“Back then it felt like a very long way off and it’s remarkable how things have progressed.

“When you’re in it and things improve gradually, you don’t realise until you look back to what it was like back then in the early days of my career.

“It’s mad when you look back to 2010 when I started, we barely got expenses.

“To now be in a position to be professional and then earn a decent living from the game is obviously really pleasing.”

The change, revealed on Wednesday morning, was recommended in the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket (ICEC) report, which found discrimination is “widespread” in English and Welsh cricket.

It said women were paid 25 per cent of men’s fees for white-ball and 15 per cent for Tests by the England and Wales Cricket Board.

Knight feels this summer’s thrilling women’s Ashes series against Australia, which attracted record-breaking crowds, was a “watershed” moment.

She also believes there is room for further development, including making the women’s domestic game fully professional

“It’s another really good step forward for the game,” she continued. “It’s kind of reward from what’s been a remarkable summer.

“You talk about the women’s game playing a big role in the sport and I think this is backing that up with not just words but actions as well.

“When you look at things that happened like the Ashes, the amount of support we’ve had, the momentum that that series had and the support that it had, I think that felt like a real watershed moment.

“I guess this is kind of following on from that and just another progression.

“There are still areas that we can get better and investing in the pathway and making the domestic game fully professional is another key priority to continue to have that sustainability of the women’s game.

“It’s really pleasing but hopefully there are more things down the line that will continue to improve.”

England could hand debuts to wicketkeeper-batter Bess Heath and 17-year-old fast bowler Mahika Gaur for their sold-out series opener against Sri Lanka in Sussex.

Top-ranked T20 bowler Sophie Ecclestone, batter Sophia Dunkley and experienced all-rounder Nat Sciver-Brunt have been rested.

Speaking of teenager Gaur, Knight said: “She’s unique, a left-armer that’s, I think, 6ft 3in, which is pretty mad.

“I think she’s had a growth spurt since the first time I met her a couple of months ago so she obviously brings that.

“She’s got a pretty good action and swings the ball late. She’s very young so we have to manage her pretty carefully and make sure we’re looking after her as a person and as a cricketer.

“She’s certainly exciting.

“We’ve obviously rested a few senior players so that gives us a chance to try and grow the pool of players we’re picking from.”

The first batch of tickets for India’s matches at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 went live on August 29, and it was not a pleasant experience for the fans.

The buildup for the 2023 World Cup has been far from ideal from the fans’ perspective. After an unprecedented delay in the announcement of the tournament schedule messed with the travel plans of fans, the resentment peaked on the evening of August 29, the day when the tickets for India’s World Cup matches went on pre-sale for Mastercard users.

The tickets went live at 6 pm Indian time on BookMyShow, ICC’s ticketing partner for the World Cup. To handle the large volume of people, BookMyShow set up a virtual queue system where people would be granted access to the booking portal on a first-come-first-serve basis. Things, however, didn’t go to plan.

Chaos ensued for a couple of hours as fans logged on in anticipation and were met with nothing but disappointment in the form of seemingly never-ending virtual waiting queues and system crashes on the ticketing platform.

“Made me wonder if anyone even got tickets or if the whole thing was a scam!” was the immediate reaction of Myra, a fan from Mumbai. Looking to book four tickets for the India-Sri Lanka game scheduled in her city on November 2, she expressed her frustration at the lack of clarity: “The whole process seems like it is utterly mismanaged. There is a lack of clarity with regard to why we are unable to access the portal or buy the tickets.

“At 6pm, when the sale was supposed to start, we were added to a queue. After waiting for more than an hour, we couldn’t access the portal at all. There should have been some sort of clarity from their end if the site crashed or the tickets were sold out.”

Rohan, a software engineer in Bangalore, tried booking for two venues – Kolkata and Ahmedabad – but to no avail. He explained the ordeal of having to wait in queues with fluctuating waiting times in detail: “As soon as I entered the platform to book India vs Pakistan tickets, I didn’t find the option to do so. I also noticed India vs South Africa was showing sold out. This went on for around 10 mins. Then the platform seemed to refresh and I could see all match tickets were available.

“I selected the India vs Pakistan game and the platform put me in a queue. The initial estimated wait time was 11 minutes but it made me wait for almost an hour. I tried to book just one seat and I must have tried around 20 times, but every time I clicked ‘Book’, I would get an error. Eventually, the website kicked me out of the ticket booking screen and then again put me in a five-plus-hour-long queue.”

Aman from Kolkata tried to book tickets for the India-South Africa game at the Eden Gardens on November 5, and had a similarly frustrating experience with the fluctuating waiting times: “I got in the queue in the first three minutes. Waiting time shown initially was 15 minutes. The timer kept increasing and decreasing and around 50 minutes later I got to the next page, where it showed that all tickets were sold out.”

There were countless other similar experiences from fans around the country and beyond. The common sentiment was of frustration towards BCCI and ICC for not being able to create better arrangements for an event that is supposed to be the pinnacle of the sport.

While there are still several opportunities to book tickets for the World Cup given the phase-wise nature of the sale, the experience during the pre-sale on August 29 has left a bitter taste in the mouth of the fans, adding to the resentment built from the changing schedules.

A month before the start of the most anticipated tournament in the sport, this is not how the biggest stakeholders of the game should be feeling.

England will host New Zealand for three T20Is and four ODIs in the summer of 2023. Here is where you can watch NZ vs ENG 2023 live, including TV channels and live streaming.

England will set out to defend their World Cup title later this year in India. Before that, they will play four ODIs against New Zealand – whom they beat at the final at Lord’s four years ago – at home, which will follow three T20Is against the same team.

The three T20Is will be played at Riverside Ground, Chester-le-Street on August 30, Old Trafford, Manchester on September 1, and Edgbaston, Birmingham on September 3.

The first two matches will be played under lights, and will begin at 6 PM local time, while the third, a day match, will start at 2.30 PM.

England Women to get same match fees as men after Ashes summer boosts profile

England Women’s players are to receive the same match fees as the men’s team after a thrilling Ashes summer boosted their profile.

The England and Wales Cricket Board has announced payments to Heather Knight’s side are being brought into line with those made to Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler and their team-mates in the wake of record crowds and increased viewing figures.

The increase will take effect immediately, starting with this week’s Vitality IT20 series against Sri Lanka.

ECB chief executive officer Richard Gould said: “This summer’s thrilling Metro Bank Women’s Ashes series demonstrated how women’s cricket is continuing to grow at pace in this country, with record attendances and TV viewing.

“Growing the women’s and girls’ game is a key priority for us and in recent years we have considerably increased investment both in building a domestic women’s structure to produce the players of the future and in increasing player rewards.

“In the years ahead, we will continue to invest ahead of revenues. We are currently considering all the recommendations made by the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket, but equalising match fees is one immediate step we are pleased to make now.

“We all want cricket to be the team sport of choice for female athletes and – with the investments we are making and increasingly-lucrative opportunities around the world – we are seeing cricketers become some of the highest earning female athletes in UK team sports.

“However, we know there is still much further to go as we ultimately strive for equality across the game.

“As we continue to grow women’s cricket, we will continue to focus on making considered investments that stretch far-and-wide across the women’s cricket structures, delivering a thriving, profitable and future-proofed game.”

A total of 110,00 people watched the drawn summer series, which saw Australia retain the Ashes in front of crowds of 19,527 at Edgbaston, 20,328 at the Kia Oval and 21,610 at Lord’s which set successive new records for a home England Women bilateral fixture, while 23,207 tickets were sold for the five days of the Trent Bridge Test.

Broadcast viewing figures of 5.3 million, in addition to 47 million video views, were double those in 2019.

England skipper Knight said: “It’s really important that we continue to drive the women’s game forward and it’s fantastic to see equal match fees for England Women and England Men.

“The direction of travel for the women’s game has always been the most important thing, creating a sustainable product that people want to watch and play and I’m sure this will make cricket an increasingly-attractive sport to girls and young women as we continue to grow the game.

“I would also like to thank the PCA and England Women’s Player Partnership for their support in representing the players and the growth of the professional game.”

The ECB currently funds 80 professional women’s domestic cricketers in addition to its 18 England Women’s centrally-contracted players.

Last year, the governing body announced a GBP 3.5milion increase in funding for the women’s regional game to run until the end of 2024, while the salary pot per team was raised to GBP 250,000, meaning the average salary for a women’s regional cricketer will be GBP 25,000.

KL Rahul will be unavailable for the first two matches of the 2023 Asia Cup, further extending his time off from the Indian team due to injury. Here is a brief history of his never-ending list of injuries that have plagued him throughout his cricket career.

When KL Rahul was named in the Indian squad for the Asia Cup, there was hope hope of him being match-fit ahead of India’s first game of the tournament, on September 2 against Pakistan.

However, in a press conference held on August 29, India head coach Rahul Dravid updated that despite being on his road to recovery, KL Rahul will have to miss the first two matches of the tournament as India intend to take be cautious about him keeping the upcoming World Cup in mind.

In a nine-year international career, Rahul has had rotten luck with injuries. This setback before the Asia Cup extends his already long waiting time before he gets back to top-flight cricket.

Timeline of KL Rahul’s injuries and illnesses

June 2015: Rahul is ruled out of the one-off Test against Bangladesh due to dengue, months after having made his Test debut.

September 2015: Rahul is ruled out of the 2015 Karnataka Premier League due to a quadriceps strain he picked up during India’s 2015 tour of Sri Lanka.

September 2016: Rahul picks up a hamstring injury in the first Test match against New Zealand in Kanpur. He is ruled out of the rest of the series.

November 2016: Having recovered from the hamstring injury, Rahul injures his forearm in his comeback game, the second Test of the five-match series against England, in Visakhapatnam. The injury is aggravated during training, ruling him out of the third Test in Mohali. He returns for the fourth Test.

February 2017: Rahul injures his shoulder during the first Test against Australia, in Pune, but plays the entire series through the pain, making 393 runs. It aggravates the the injury, and he has to miss IPL 2017 and Champions Trophy 2017 as he undergoes shoulder surgery

July 2017: Viral fever delays Rahul’s comeback as he misses out on the first Test match of the Sri Lanka tour, which was supposed to be his first after shoulder surgery.

June 2019: Rahul lands awkwardly on his back while fielding in the 2019 World Cup match against England and has to leave the field in pain. Luckily, it isn’t serious, and he makes his way back to bat in the second innings.

January 2021: Rahul sprains his left wrist in training between the second and third Tests of India’s famous 2020/21 tour of Australia. He is ruled out of the series without having played any part in it.

May 2021: Rahul is diagnosed with acute appendicitis during IPL 2021, requiring him to get surgery. He misses a game for the Punjab Kings before the league is stalled as Covid-19 breaches the biosecure bubble.

November 2021: A left thigh strain rules Rahul out of the two-match home Test series against New Zealand.

June 2022: Rahul is ruled out of the T20Is against South Africa due to a groin injury, which is later revealed to be a sports hernia. He undergoes surgery for it in Germany, ruling him out of the fifth Test against England at Edgbaston in July.

December 2022: Rahul injures his hand during practice ahead of the second Test against Bangladesh in Dhaka. Fortunately, the injury isn’t bad enough to rule him out.

May 2023: Rahul suffers a right thigh muscle injury while chasing after a ball during an IPL 2023 match. He undergoes surgery, and misses the remainder of IPL, the World Test Championship final, and the West Indies and Ireland tours.

August 2023: Rahul is picked in the Asia Cup squad as his recovery from the thigh injury is almost complete. But he suffers from another unspecified ‘niggle’ which rules him out of the first two matches of the tournament.

Where to watch South Africa vs Australia T20Is live

Australia are touring South Africa for three T20Is and five ODIs, starting August 30. Here is where you can catch live action from the SA vs AUS T20I series, including TV channels, live streaming and match timing details.

The last time Australia toured South Africa for a T20I series was back in February 2020, just before the Covid-19 pandemic brought the world to a standstill. They won that series 2-1, and will want to replicate or improve on that result from three and a half years ago.

All three T20Is will be played in Durban – on August 30, and September 1 and 3.

Mitchell Marsh will lead Australia in the T20Is as they continue to look for a replacement for Aaron Finch, their long-standing T20I captain who retired from international cricket earlier this year.

Left-arm fast bowler Spencer Johnson who recently lit up the Hundred on debut is being looked at a bright fast-bowling prospect in the country. He has been given his maiden international call-up for the T20I series.

Matthew Short and Aaron Hardie have received maiden international call-ups as well, but Glenn Maxwell has been ruled out due to an injury and has been replaced by Matthew Wade.

South Africa have also given three players maiden international call-ups – Dewald Brevis, Donovan Ferreira, and Matthew Breetzke. They also have Gerald Coetzee, who has made ODI and Test debuts but is yet to play T20Is, and comeback men Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen.

On this day in 2007: Sir Andrew Strauss resigns as England Test captain

Sir Andrew Strauss brought the curtain down on one of the most successful eras in English cricket on this day in 2012, announcing his resignation as Test captain and retirement from the game.

Strauss, 35, blamed his faltering batting form for the decision to bow out on exactly 100 Test caps as he was revered as one his country’s finest-ever leaders, an endlessly dignified presence on and off the field and a captain who led the side to success 24 times in 50 Tests.

That record places him fifth behind Joe Root, Sir Alastair Cook, Michael Atherton and Michael Vaughan as his country’s most experienced skipper and joint third in terms of matches won.

But he will primarily be remembered as a man who masterminded home and away Ashes wins in 2009 and 2010-11 and became the first England captain to get his hands on the ICC mace awarded to the world’s number one Test team.

His successor as captain was confirmed as his opening partner Cook, with Strauss starting a career in commentary before becoming the first-ever director of England cricket in May 2015 before resigning in 2018.

Oval Invincibles head coach Tom Moody has backed Gus Atkinson to shine with England but warned against judging the fast bowler exclusively by his speeds.

Atkinson has regularly exceeded 90mph in The Hundred while his 10 wickets in 114 deliveries helped the Invincibles collect their maiden men’s title after defeating Manchester Originals in Sunday’s final.

His breakout summer could continue with a first England cap this week as their white-ball schedule gets under way with a four-match T20 series against New Zealand, starting on Wednesday at Chester-le-Street.

An ODI series against the Kiwis follows then the 25-year-old is set to go to India for England’s World Cup defence, and Moody feels the Surrey paceman has the tools to make the grade at international level.

“I think he’ll do very, very well,” Moody told the PA news agency. “Given the opportunity, I see him continuing to spend more time in an England shirt than a Surrey or an Oval Invincibles shirt.

“He clearly has good ball speed and has a grounded character and personality. He’s an exciting talent. Those types of bowlers don’t tend to come along that often.”

Atkinson has been fast-tracked into England’s set-up amid Jofra Archer’s problems with his right elbow, with the pair likened to one another because of similarly smooth actions which generate breakneck pace.

Archer’s briskness has been frequently discussed in the past and Moody believes Atkinson will have to get used to his speeds being a topic of conversation – even if they are not the be-all and end-all.

“It’s the demands of international cricket and the expectation,” Moody said. “When someone sees someone that can bowl at a certain pace, everyone expects them to bowl that pace all the time.

“But at times that’s not possible purely from a physical standpoint and also conditions may not allow you to run in and let fly at that pace consistently.”

Atkinson has significantly enhanced his reputation in recent weeks, as have a number of other domestic talents because of the exposure that comes with every match in The Hundred being televised.

There remains scrutiny on the competition’s future plus its ability to draw in the top names, with Rashid Khan, Ellyse Perry and Alyssa Healy withdrawing from the third edition – albeit due to injury.

But Moody thinks the quality he has witnessed is justification enough for The Hundred to attempt to slot behind the Indian Premier League as the second best domestic tournament in the world.

“To me that’s a no-brainer for English cricket to try to strive to achieve that,” Moody added. “The IPL is the IPL and that’s a separate beast altogether.

“But there’s a number of other franchise tournaments around the world that want to be the second best and there is no reason that England can’t achieve that given the infrastructure and talent they have.

“There’s a lot to like about The Hundred, it seems to have gone from strength to strength.

“The standard of cricket is a very high standard and I think a lot of that is to do with the domestic talent. In England at the moment, there is a lot of high-class white-ball cricketers around.”

Originals head coach Simon Katich agreed with his fellow Australian and argued having just eight teams as opposed to the 18 first-class counties forces the cream to rise to the top.

“There’s so much good talent here in England, particularly in white-ball cricket,” Katich told PA.

“Condensing the talent pool to eight teams has been a real win because it’s going to fast-track the development of a lot of young players to hopefully go on and play for England in the years to come.”

The 100-ball format is still only played professionally in the UK but Katich added: “I think it’s got a lot of merit to it being played in other parts of the world.”
