Five bad weeks do not define a team – England’s Ben Duckett

Five bad weeks do not define a team – England’s Ben Duckett

Ben Duckett cast doubt on England overhauling their white-ball approach despite a wretched World Cup which he insisted “does not define a team”.

Duckett watched from home as England’s defence of the crown they won amid much fanfare in 2019 went badly awry, losing six of their first seven fixtures before claiming a couple of consolation wins.

England’s misery has led to speculation of a reset going forward and only half a dozen of the contingent from India are out in the Caribbean for an ODI series starting on Sunday in Antigua.

Duckett is one of the beneficiaries of a number of more established stars being rested but he was adamant that England do not need to make adjustments to a blueprint that served them so well for many years.

“We have watched how England have played cricket over the past eight years and one bad five weeks does not define a team,” Duckett said. “It’s probably been the greatest white-ball team ever.

“If we can go and play how they have played over the past eight years or even half as good that will be an achievement. We know how they want to play their cricket.

“I don’t think the approach is going to change because of how the World Cup went. I think the age is probably the factor. If they win that World Cup, the same group of players might be here.

“It was potentially guys who were late 30s and coming towards the end of their 50-over careers. So it seemed like there was always going to be a fresh start after it.”

England Press Conference and Nets Session – Lord's – Tuesday June 27th

Captain Jos Buttler, batter Harry Brook, all-rounders Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran and fast bowlers Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse are the England players out in the West Indies who were at the World Cup.

Players on the fringes such as teenage leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed, big-hitting all-rounder Will Jacks and uncapped fast bowler John Turner now have an opportunity in these three matches over the next 10 days.

Duckett rejected the notion there was any additional burdens on this group after recent events, even if the left-handed batter admitted his desperation to shine to stay in England’s limited-overs plans.

“Not in the slightest,” he said. “We don’t feel pressure, you know? I think fresh is a good word. A group of players who can go and showcase what we can do.

“But I think for each and every one of us it’s important to perform. I need to go and prove that I’m good enough to be on this team and so do the other guys.”

Duckett has cemented himself into England’s Test team as an opener but even though he is renowned for his attack-minded mentality, he has been capped in just eight ODIs and 11 T20s in seven years.

In his most recent international appearance, Duckett registered an unbeaten hundred against Ireland in September as part of a second-string England side, with the big guns rested ahead of the World Cup.

At 29, he could be entering his peak and a mainstay in all three formats but Duckett, who is expected to bat in the middle-order this weekend, is refusing to taking anything for granted.

“I’m genuinely thinking about the next three weeks,” he added. “I know how difficult it is to stay in a side when there’s this many players.

“I think the biggest thing I’ve learned over the last 12 to 15 months is not thinking too far ahead.

“I’ve got to go and score runs this series to get to the next one, there’s people banging down the door who aren’t here so, I don’t think I’m a shoo-in for the next four years. I’d be silly to think that.”

What can be learned from India’s white-ball squads to tour South Africa?

What can be learned from India’s white-ball squads to tour South Africa?

India have named three squads for their upcoming all-format tour of South Africa. Here are the main talking points from the white-ball portion of the announcement.

While India’s Test squad is full-strength from those available, the white-ball groups are not. The ODI squad is noticeably second-string, with the next World Cup four years away, and even with a T20 World Cup fast approaching, there are key absentees from that group as well.

According to the BCCI, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have asked for rest from the white-ball leg of the tour. Had the BCCI not made that clear, speculation over their futures would have reached fever pitch, but their continued absence in T20I cricket remains a point of debate. Rohit, officially, is still the all-format captain. Kohli is India’s greatest all-format star. Both will end 2023 without a T20I appearance.

bet365

There are questions over the suitability of each of them in the format, with Kohli’s anchor role and struggles against spin in the middle overs under scrutiny, and Rohit having never cracked the Indian Premier League, even while his international record is formidable. India’s strength in depth is formidable. It remains to be seen if they have been quietly moved aside, or if they will slot back in when the main event rolls around.

Beyond them, there are players absent who will undoubtedly be first choice in the USA and the Caribbean. Jasprit Bumrah, for example, who India are right to use sparingly. Still, the lack of a press conference or release makes it hard to work out who has been rested, and who has been left out. KL Rahul, in both of the other two squads, is a noted absence. Ravindra Jadeja, Ravi Bishnoi and Jitesh Sharma are in the T20I squad but not in the ODI squad. For Axar Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal and Sanju Samson, the opposite is true.

Given India’s obscene resources, it makes sense to give a go to as many players as possible. But some decisions still raise an eyebrow. For example, it is odd that Yashasvi Jaiswal can have the start he has had in Tests and T20Is but not yet find a space in the middle format.

Some of this can be explained by India’s squeezed tour schedule, with a three-day intra-squad Test warm-up running alongside the ODIs. There is still some overlap between the squads, and it is not just the fringe Test players who have been made available in ODIs, since at least one of Shreyas Iyer and Rahul is all but certain to start the series.

Amongst all this sifting of hierarchy, the individual stories shouldn’t be missed. There’s Chahal, left out in ODIs since January, playing in the County Championship as his flame faded but winning a recall now. There’s Samson, an IPL phenom, who has been given a game here and there in T20Is but failed to catch light, and who is now persistently overlooked. There’s Rinku Singh, the archetypal T20I finisher, now given a chance in the longer white-ball format.

India are always playing cricket somewhere, but these games should matter. For the ODIs, it’s a chance to get experience in the venue for the next World Cup. For the T20Is, that time until the next World Cup will quickly disappear. There’s plenty for India to learn, and plenty to be learned about their thinking already.

Rahul’s roles and the end for Rahane? Five talking points from India’s Test squad for South Africa

Rohit Bumrah

India named their squads for all three formats for their upcoming tour of South Africa. Here are the takeaways from the Test squad.

After three T20Is and three ODIs, India will play two Test matches on the South Africa tour – at Centurion from December 26, and at Cape Town from January 3.

On November 30, the selectors announced the squads for all three series, featuring – and omitting – some major names. Here are the key talking points from the Test squad.

bet365

India’s Test squad in South Africa: Rohit Sharma (c), Jasprit Bumrah (vc), Ishan Kishan (wk), KL Rahul (wk), Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Ruturaj Gaikwad, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Shami (subject to fitness).

End of the road for Rahane?

The selectors had left Cheteshwar Pujara out of the Test squad for the West Indies tour earlier this year. However, Ajinkya Rahane’s 89 and 46 on comeback in the 2021-23 World Test Championship final had earned him a spot. They even appointed him vice-captain, though that was obviously a stopgap arrangement.

With a fit Shreyas Iyer back to take over the No.4 position and enough backup around, the selectors decided to move on from Rahane, who had failed in his two outings in the Caribbean.

… and the same for Umesh?

Maybe not, for Umesh is an unusual fast bowler. Of Indian fast bowlers with a hundred Test wickets on home soil, he has the best average (25.88) and strike rate (48). Outside India, the numbers read 38.39 and 60. He may play at home in the long series against England, but at 36, he may not tour again in Test whites.

Naming Bumrah vice-captain

Bumrah had led India in the Edgbaston Test match of 2022, and recently, in the T20Is on the Ireland tour when he returned from an 11-month injury hiatus. It is unlikely someone as injury-prone as him will be looked upon as Rohit’s long-term successor.

However, by naming him Rohit’s deputy, the selectors made it clear that KL Rahul – who had started the Test series against Australia earlier this year as vice-captain – is not a certainty in the starting XI.

The roles Rahul may fill

Quite a few, actually. He is a specialist opener, so he may fill in if one of Rohit or Yashasvi Jaiswal is injured. If the team management wants Shubman Gill to go up from one-drop to replace an opener, Rahul can take Gill’s place. Or perhaps replace Iyer at five.

Rahul has started only one first-class match as designated wicketkeeper – an emergency for the touring Indians against the County Select XI in 2021 – but barring first-choice gloveman Ishan Kishan, he is the only one in the squad with keeping experience. To be fair, during the World Cup, he demonstrated that his glovework has improved significantly.

Prasidh’s selection

India lost both their last two Test series in South Africa by 1-2 margins. After the 2018/19 tour, Mike Haysman had explained how the South African fast bowlers had exploited their extra height on the surfaces.

Rahul Dravid, a couple of months into the role of India’s head coach, observed the same during the 2021/22 tour: “It just felt like the ball seemed to misbehave a little bit more for them … On up-and-down wickets sometimes just having that extra height might tend to make a little bit of a difference, so it just felt for us the balls didn’t misbehave as much.

“Some did, of course. There were some balls that did misbehave even for us, but probably not as many as it did for them. I guess they have that natural height advantage. We are bowlers who tend to pitch the ball up a little bit more, we look for swing, we kiss the surface a little bit more.”

At 188 cm, Prasidh is the tallest of the Indian fast bowlers in the squad. He has played only 11 first-class matches – none of them since March 2022 – but his 49 wickets in the format have come at 17.61 apiece.

Just like Bumrah from six seasons ago, Prasidh, too, may debut in South Africa, especially if Shami, whose availability is subject to fitness, does not recover in time.

Uganda seal T20 World Cup qualification, Zimbabwe eliminated

Uganda seal T20 World Cup qualification, Zimbabwe eliminated
Uganda qualify for T20 World Cup 2024

Uganda beat Rwanda with nine wickets and 71 balls in hand to qualify for the T20 World Cup for the first time.

Uganda finished second in the 2022/23 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier to become the 20th, and final, team to qualify for the 2024 T20 World Cup, to be hosted by the West Indies and the USA.

‘The Cranes’ came into their last league match, at the Wanderers Cricket Ground in Windhoek, with a 16-0 record against Rwanda – the most one-sided record by any side against a single opposition in men’s T20Is.

bet365

To qualify for the T20 World Cup, they needed one point, having beaten Full Member Zimbabwe earlier in the competition – in other words, even a washed-out match would have seen them through.

Uganda shot out Rwanda for 65 in 18.5 overs after their captain Brian Masaba opted to bowl. Alpesh Ramjani returned incredible figures of 3-2-1-2, while Masaba (2-10), Henry Ssenyondo (2-10), Dinesh Nakrani (2-16), and Riazat Ali Shah (1-5) shared the other wickets.

For Rwanda, Eric Dusingizimana (19 in 22 balls) and Muhammad Nadir (11 in 24) were the only ones to reach double figures. The entire innings featured three fours and a six.

Uganda barely broke a sweat during their chase. Ronak Patel fell for a 20-ball 18, but Simon Ssenazi (26 not out in 21 balls) and Roger Mukasa (13 not out in 8) saw them home in 8.1 overs.

Uganda had qualified for the Africa Qualifier by virtue of making it to the Global Qualifier of 2022. They were joined by hosts Namibia and Zimbabwe, both of whom had played in the 2022 T20 World Cup, and Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Tanzania, all of whom qualified from this year’s African sub-regional qualifiers.

They began the Qualifier with an eight-wicket win against Tanzania before going down to Namibia by six wickets. Then, in their first ever full international match against an ICC Full Member side, they restricted Zimbabwe to 136-7 and chased down the target with five wickets and five balls in hand.

A nine-wicket win against Nigeria followed. In the all-important penultimate clash, they posted 162-5 and bowled out Kenya for 129, as good as sealing a T20 World Cup berth.

Amidst all this, Namibia had became the first of two teams from the group to qualify for the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Zimbabwe and Kenya, the other teams in the race, were on six points – two behind Uganda – when they began their respective last matches, against each other. A point, thus, guaranteed Uganda a spot: they secured two points to qualify.

This will be Uganda’s first appearance at a World Cup, though Sam Walusimbi and John Nagenda, both Ugandans, played in the 1975 World Cup when the country used to compete as part of the East Africa side.

Ben Stokes has surgery in attempt to resolve long-standing knee injury

Ben Stokes has surgery in attempt to resolve long-standing knee injury

Ben Stokes has undergone surgery on his troublesome left knee and will begin a rehabilitation programme with the aim of being fit for England’s next Test assignment in just under two months’ time.

A chronic injury gradually worsened to the point of Stokes not bowling in the final three Ashes Tests, while he was selected as a specialist batter for England’s doomed World Cup title defence in India.

Stokes revealed earlier this month he intended to have an operation at the end of the World Cup in a bid to “get back to doing what I’ve been known for” and operate as a fully-fledged all-rounder.

He posted an image on Instagram of himself on crutches on Wednesday outside London’s Cromwell Hospital, alongside a short caption which said: “In and out. Under the (knife emoji) done. Rehab starts now.”

No timescale has been given for his recovery but Stokes is attempting to be back in time to captain England in a five-match Test series in India, which gets under way in Hyderabad on January 25.

Stokes confirmed last week he will not feature in next year’s Indian Premier League in an effort to manage his workload and fitness. He was released by Chennai Super Kings a couple of days later.

Uganda one win away from beating Zimbabwe to T20 World Cup qualification after win over Kenya

Uganda one win away from beating Zimbabwe to T20 World Cup qualification after win over Kenya
Uganda are now one win away from qualifying for the T20 World Cup

Uganda have put themselves in prime position to qualify for the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup with a 33-run win over Kenya in their penultimate match in the Africa Qualifier.

Having beaten Zimbabwe on Sunday (November 26), their latest victory means Uganda are just one win away from securing a place in next year’s tournament. If they beat Rwanda in their final match of the tournament tomorrow (November 30), they will join Namibia as the two teams to progress from the Qualifier.

Opening batter Simon Ssesazi scored 60 runs off 50 balls in today’s win, Dinesh Nakrani from No. 6 blasted 40 off 23 to set Kenya a target of 163 to chase. Bilal Hasan then took four wickets as Kenya were bowled out for 129, returning figures of 4-39.

bet365

While Uganda’s path to 2024 is simple if they beat Rwanda, they are not necessarily ruled out if they lose. Namibia have already secured qualification and sit at the top of the table on ten points. The only other teams mathematically capable of securing the second qualification sport are Uganda on eight points, who currently occupy the position, Zimbabwe who have six points and Kenya who also have six.

All of those three teams have one match left to play. If Uganda lose their match to Rwanda and Kenya and Zimbabwe win their final games, all three teams could end up on eight points. In that scenario, NRR would decide who finished in second on the table. Zimbabwe’s NRR (2.322) is significantly better than both Uganda’s (0.759) and Kenya’s (0.039).

If both Uganda and Zimbabwe lose but Kenya win, Uganda could still qualify. Kenya’s NRR means that they would require a significant swing in order to overtake Uganda, but not an impossible one.

All three of the final matches of the tournament will take place in Windhoek tomorrow (November 30).

Mohammad Amir rejects Mohammad Hafeez’s proposal to take back international retirement

Mohammad Amir rejects Mohammad Hafeez’s proposal to take back international retirement
Mohammad Amir

Mohammad Amir has rejected the Director of Pakistan’s men’s cricket team, Mohammad Hafeez‘s proposal to take back his international retirement.

Before embarking on the tour to Australia, the newly appointed Director of Pakistan’s men’s cricket team, Mohammad Hafeez, held a press conference at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on November 28.

Among the host of topics Hafeez touched upon, one was that of left-arm seamer Mohammad Amir. Hafeez said that he reached out to the now-retired fast bowler and offered him to take back his retirement if he wished to play for Pakistan.

“I personally called Mohammad Amir and told him that if he wants to play for Pakistan, he is free to take back his retirement and get back in the system,” said Hafeez.

bet365

Hafeez added that he would have considered Amir for selection if he performed at the domestic level, but the left-arm seamer rejected his proposal hands down. “‘If you perform well, you will be selected in the Pakistan team. Once you come into the team, I assure you that you will be given equal opportunities like others.’

“However, he said that he has moved on in his life and his priorities have changed in life, which we have to respect. He said that he wants to play international leagues and does not want to go back to scratch [in domestic cricket],” said Hafeez.

Back in December 2020, Amir had announced his international retirement citing ‘mental torture’ by the team management. In a public fallout between Amir and the Pakistan Cricket Board, the seamer had given an interview on TV claiming that he was not wanted in the Pakistan team.

The 31-year-old has not played international cricket since then and has primarily plied his trade across domestic T20 leagues across the globe.

He burst onto the scene as a wiry 17-year-old quick who rattled the best batters in the world before getting embroiled in the infamous spot-fixing scandal which saw him get banned from cricket.

Amir made an international comeback in 2016 and was an integral part of Pakistan’s 2017 Champions Trophy triumph.

Stumping appeal reveals rare wicketkeeping no-ball to cost India in defeat to Australia

Stumping appeal reveals rare wicketkeeping no-ball to cost India in defeat to Australia
A stumping review went against India in more ways than one

India were on the receiving end of another Glenn Maxwell heist as the Australia all-rounder blitzed a 47-ball century to help Matthew Wade’s side chase down 223 off the final ball of their run chase in Guwahati.

It was an eventful game with India opener Ruturaj Gaikwad going through the gears earlier in the piece, accelerating from 21 off 21 to a final score of 123 not out off 57 deliveries. India took 30 runs off the final over of the innings with Maxwell bowling it as a result of an injury picked up by Kane Richardson.

India looked to be on course towards a routine victory when Ravi Bishnoi snared the dangerous Tim David for a first-ball duck to leave Australia reeling on 134-5 in the 14th over bumping up the required rate to 14.50 runs per over.

bet365

Maxwell and Wade clawed Australia back into the contest but after Prasidh Krishna conceded just six runs off the 18th over, Australia still needed 43 off the final 12 deliveries.

The left-arm spin of Axar Patel delivered the penultimate over with Wade making the most of the favourable match-up to go from six off eight to 23 off 14. Wade’s first (and only) six came off the fourth legal delivery of the over – a free hit.

The previous delivery was thrown out wide by Axar. Wade looked to drive it through the off side but missed the ball entirely before Ishan Kishan whipped off the bails and appealed for a stumping. The ball was called wide but when the stumping call was sent upstairs, TV umpire KN Ananthapadmanabhan adjudicated that Kishan’s gloves were not entirely behind the stumps as he collected the ball. The on-field decision was subsequently changed from a wide to a no-ball, turning the following delivery into a free hit that was duly deposited into the stands by Wade for a straight six.

Five runs off the over’s final two deliveries (a tally that included four byes against Kishan’s name) left Australia requiring 21 off the last over which was to be delivered by Krishna. Wade hit the first ball over for four before getting the in-form Maxwell back on strike needing 16 off the final four deliveries. Maxwell then struck a six and three consecutive fours to register his fourth T20I hundred and take Australia over the line to halve India’s series lead with two games to play.

Watch: Ruturaj Gaikwad flicks ball from outside off-side wide line over fine leg for six

Watch: Ruturaj Gaikwad flicks ball from outside off-side wide line over fine leg for six

Ruturaj Gaikwad smashed Aaron Hardie for a third six in the 18th over of India’s innings in the third T20I against Australia, reaching a first T20I century off 52 balls.

Gaikwad teed off at the end of the innings in Guwahati, taking India from 155-3 at the beginning of the 18th over to 222-3 at the end of the 20th. At the beginning of Hardie’s 18th, Gaikwad was on 71 off 44 having just seen off Jason Behrendorff’s final over in an economical spell.

He smashed Hardie’s first ball straight back over his head for the first six of the over, before missing a wide which Hardie had to bowl again. His re-bowl was a short ball outside off, dispatched over deep midwicket for an even bigger boundary.

bet365

A four and a dot ball later, Gaikwad hit the biggest six of the lot. Hardie bowled full and wide on the off side, to which Gaikwad stepped across his stumps and powerfully flicked it behind square on the leg side, watching it sail into the crowd. Two off the following delivery completed a 25-run over for Hardie.

However, the worst was yet to come for Australia. After Nathan Ellis conceded 12-runs from the penultimate over of the innings, Glenn Maxwell was handed the ball for the 20th, having not bowled previously in the innings. Gaikwad dispatched him for another three sixes in the over, the first of which brought up his hundred, with two fours also making up a 30-run over.

Gaikwad’s innings was his second big score in a row for the series, he hit 58 off 43 balls in the second T20I on Sunday (November 26). His powerful finish left Australia needing to chase 223 to avoid conceding the series.

While the deadline for retentions has passed, the trading window is still open and will only close one week prior to the auction, that is, on December 12. Which means there’s still a chance for some reshuffling to take place in the squads ahead of the auction.

The purse for each team has been increased from INR 95 crore to INR 100 crore. Depending on whether they do any more trades or not, the purse remaining for each team will be adjusted accordingly ahead of the auction.

The exact time at which the IPL 2024 auction is scheduled to begin will be updated once it is known.

WBBL 2023: Chamari Athapaththu wins Player of the Tournament after being ignored in the draft

WBBL 2023: Chamari Athapaththu wins Player of the Tournament after being ignored in the draft
Chamari Athapaththu WBBL

Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu has been named the Player of the Tournament for the ninth edition of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) after she was ignored in the initial player draft.

Chamari Athapaththu was not picked in the player draft of WBBL 09, following which she had expressed her disappointment. Having been ignored in the Women’s Hundred and the inaugural Women’s Premier League as well, Athapaththu made a post on social media after her WBBL snub.

This came right after Sri Lanka Women had beaten England Women in the second T20I of a three-match series in Chelmsford. Athapaththu was named Player of the Match in that game following her 55 (31) and 1-11 off three overs.

bet365

As luck would have it though, Athapaththu did eventually get a break in the WBBL when Sydney Thunder brought her on as a replacement overseas player. With Marizanne Kapp unavailable for their first game, Athapaththu got a go and never looked back.

By the end of the league stage, Athapaththu scored 511 runs from 13 innings at an average of 42.58 and a strike rate of almost 130, with as many as five fifty-plus scores. Only Beth Mooney scored more runs than her at that point.

That was not all. Apart from being the second-highest run-scorer, Athapaththu also picked nine wickets at 25.55 apiece, conceding just 6.79 runs per over.

Athapaththu has been in phenomenal form in international cricket in 2023, where she led Sri Lanka Women to their first series victory over New Zealand Women in ODIs and first series victory over England Women in T20Is, Her exclusion from the initial WBBL player draft was baffling.

To be fair, she did not have a good record in until this season – she averaged 18 and struck at 95 from more than 30 matches – but her T20I (470 runs at 31.33, SR 131) and ODI (415 runs at 69.16, SR 125) records this year were too good for her to be ignored.

Now, she has rightly been given her due. The Player of The Tournament award was decided by the standing umpires throughout WBBL 09 and Athapaththu trumped Adelaide Strikers opener Katie Mack by one vote.

Sydney Thunder finished fourth on the points table at the end of the group stage and will be facing Brisbane Heat in the Eliminator at the WACA Ground in Perth today (November 28).

West Indies v Bangladesh in 2022 – Almanack report

West Indies v Bangladesh in 2022 – Almanack report
West Indies v Bangladesh 2022

Bangladesh toured the West Indies in 2022 for two Test matches and lost both. Vinode Mamchan’s report appeared in the 2023 edition of Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack.

It looked as if it would be one-way traffic: West Indies swept both Tests, and the two T20s that escaped the weather, but Bangladesh bounced back to win all three 50-over internationals. It was their second successive ODI series victory in the Caribbean, after a 2-1 win in July 2018. The leitmotifs of the tour were poor pitches and batting – but good bowling. West Indies hardly put a foot wrong in the Tests, with Kraigg Brathwaite captaining shrewdly, and his fellow Barbadian Kyle Mayers continuing to improve. Mayers, who had inspired a famous win in Chittagong with a double-century on Test debut in February 2021, showed his liking for Bangladeshi bowling with his second Test hundred. He also took six cheap wickets, mostly at important moments.

The Tests gave West Indies momentum as the T20 series started. They were on top in the first match in Dominica when rain spoiled things, but nothing could stop them in the second. The teams flew to Guyana for the third, which was another straightforward victory, with five sixes each for Mayers and white-ball skipper Nicholas Pooran, who hit a scintillating 74 not out.

bet365

Bangladesh looked outclassed before the 50-over matches, especially when Shakib Al Hasan decided to take time off to be with his family, apparently after confirming the matches did not count for ICC Super League points. The visitors were already without the experienced wicketkeeper/batsman Mushfiqur Rahim, who missed the whole trip to make hajj in Saudi Arabia, and injured seamers Mohammad Saifuddin and Yasir Ali. However, helped by poor pitches and luck at the toss, Bangladesh’s 50-over captain Tamim Iqbal rallied his side and turned their fortunes around: they won 3–0. Tamim himself scored 117 runs, while off-spinner Mehedi Hasan took seven wickets in the first two games, and slow left-armer Taijul Islam five in the last.

Put in each time on the slow, turning tracks in which Providence seems to specialise, West Indies could not pass 178. It meant the delighted Bangladeshis jetted off with some silverware, while West Indies’ poor ODI run continued – hardly ideal preparation before the arrival of a strong Indian line-up.

Bangladesh touring party: Shakib Al Hasan (T/20 – captain), Afif Hossain (50/20), Anamul Haque (T/50/20), Ebadat Hossain (T/50), Khaled Ahmed (T), Liton Das (T/50/20), Mahmudul Hasan (T), Mahmudullah (50/20), Mehedi Hasan (20), Mehedi Hasan snr (T/50), Mominul Haque (T), Mosaddek Hossain (T/50/20), Munim Shahriar (20), Mustafizur Rahman (T/50/20), Nasum Ahmed (50/20), Nazmul Hossain (T/50), Nurul Hasan (T/50/20), Rejaur Rahman (T), Shahidul Islam (20), Shoriful Islam (T/50/20), Taijul Islam (T/50), Tamim Iqbal (T/50), Taskin Ahmed (50/20), Yasir Ali (T). Coach: RC Domingo.
Tamim Iqbal captained in the ODIs, Mahmudullah in the T20s. Yasir Ali was originally named in all the squads, but injured his back before the First Test, and played no further part in the tour; he was replaced in the Test party by Anamul Haque. Mohammad Saifuddin was chosen for both white-ball squads, but failed to recover from a back injury; he was replaced by Ebadat Hossain (50) and Taskin Ahmed (20). Shakib Al Hasan withdrew from the ODI squad.

First Test at North Sound, Antigua, June 16-19, 2022: West Indies won by seven wickets

West Indies 12pts. Toss: West Indies. Debut: G Motie.

This match was all but decided on the first morning, when Bangladesh slumped to 45-6 on a pitch offering pace and bounce. Brathwaite backed up his decision to bowl with an adhesive innings, and West Indies needed only six overs on the fourth day to complete a comfortable win.

The early inroads were made by Roach, a month short of his 34th birthday but still sharp enough to cause problems, despite a hamstring strain having cut short a stint with Surrey. He found Mahmudul Hasan’s edge with his second ball, and castled Nazmul Hossain with his seventh; Roach finished the game with seven wickets, and the match award. Mominul Haque also found the slip cordon, and collected the third duck of the innings. Then, in the space of seven balls, Tamim Iqbal was strangled down leg by Joseph, and the seemingly unthreatening Mayers began with a double-wicket maiden.

Shakib Al Hasan, the captain, stood on the burning deck to make 51 – he hit seven boundaries, more than the rest of the side put together – but no one else could hang around: the scorecard looked as if someone had been let loose with a hole punch, as the innings subsided for 103 half an hour after lunch. Amid repeated West Indian high fives, there were six ducks as Bangladesh equalled the Test record for the second match running.

The West Indian openers avoided early problems, calmly putting on 44 in 25 overs, before Campbell inside-edged Mustafizur Rahman into his stumps. By the close, the home side were only eight behind, and they cemented their advantage on a cagey second day, despite disciplined bowling. Brathwaite showed remarkable concentration to survive for 400 minutes in all, finally missing a straight one from seamer Khaled Ahmed on 94. Blackwood reined in his attacking instincts to make 63 in 213 minutes and, although off-spinner Mehedi Hasan took three quick wickets, a late flourish from Guyanese debutant Gudakesh Motie extended the lead to 162.

Bangladesh started better in their second innings, before two wickets late on the second day. Next morning, they collapsed once more, again losing two to Mayers, which left them in danger of an innings defeat at 109-6. The seventh-wicket pair prevented that with a counter-attacking stand of 123 – Shakib faced 99 balls for his 63, while Nurul Hasan hit 11 fours – but Roach extracted both with the second new ball, to take for 53.

West Indies needed only 84, but had some anxious moments: Brathwaite and Reifer fell in Khaled’s first over, and Bonner soon followed to make it 9-3. Campbell and Blackwood stopped the rot, reaching the close without further damage. Only 35 more were needed by then, and they came quickly, Campbell ending the match with a six off Nazmul Hossain, shortly after reaching his first Test fifty for 18 months. “That first session killed the match for us,” admitted Shakib.

Player of the Match: KAJ Roach.

First Test at Gros Islet, St Lucia, June 24-27, 2022: West Indies won by 10 wickets

West Indies 12pts. Toss: West Indies. Debut: A Phillip.

West Indies completed a 2–0 win after Bangladesh’s batsmen again struggled to subdue the seamers. Their own bowlers had more trouble with Mayers, who revived memories of his stunning debut double-century against Bangladesh 16 months earlier by hitting a second Test hundred. His 146 accounted for much of West Indies’ first-innings lead, which proved nearly enough when Bangladesh misfired again.

The hosts had sniffed blood when Brathwaite sent the visitors in on the fastest pitch in the Caribbean, but the first wicket did not arrive until the 12th over, when Mahmudul Hasan was bowled by the second ball from debutant Anderson Phillip, a rangy fast bowler from Trinidad. Tamim Iqbal, Nazmul Hossain and Liton Das played responsibly for nearly two hours, while Anamul Haque – in his first Test for nearly eight years after replacing Mominul Haque – made a breezy 23. But with Shakib Al Hasan falling cheaply to the lively Seales, no one could manage the big innings required, and it was left to tail-enders Ebadat Hossain and Shoriful Islam to raise the total to 234. The wickets were shared around, with Mayers again extracting two. Ebadat, who had made only 12 runs in his 26 Test innings, remained triumphantly unbeaten with 21.

The West Indian openers’ response was a partnership of 100 in 26 overs. Brathwaite stepped up a gear from the first Test, while Campbell fell just short of another half-century early on the second day. A slide to 132-4 was arrested by vice-captain Blackwood and Mayers, who did the lion’s share of the scoring in a stand of 116, looking to clobber anything off line or short of a length. Blackwood was eventually trapped by Mehedi Hasan, but Mayers roared on, reaching three figures during a stand of 96 with Da Silva. By the time Mayers miscued to mid-on, West Indies were firmly in charge.

The irrepressible Roach then struck twice in his first four overs; his first victim, Tamim, made him the sixth West Indian to reach 250 Test wickets. He soon removed Anamul as well – umpire Joel Wilson gave the lbw decision while running off the ground to dodge a shower – and from there it was a matter of time. Nazmul stuck at it for more than two hours, and wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan added an enterprising unbeaten 60 from 50 balls, with two sixes off the pacemen. The innings was quickly wrapped up: Seales took two in an over, and last man Khaled Ahmed was run out.

Brathwaite and Campbell needed only 17 balls to knock off the tiny target. Unsurprisingly, Mayers received the plaudits: “He is special – a match-winner,” said Brathwaite. West Indies’ coach, Phil Simmons, also praised the contribution made by Roach: “He is helping the other fast bowlers to mature quicker. He has taken his role as the senior pro very seriously – his influence has been massive.”

BAN vs NZ Tests squad: Full team lists and injury updates for Bangladesh v New Zealand 2023

BAN vs NZ Tests squad: Full team lists and injury updates for Bangladesh v New Zealand 2023
Tim Southee (New Zealand), Nurul Hasan (Bangladesh)

Bangladesh will host New Zealand for two Test matches from November 28, 2023. Here is the BAN vs NZ Tests squad news, including full team lists and injury updates for Bangladesh v New Zealand 2023.

Bangladesh will host New Zealand for Test cricket after more than a decade. The teams will play two Test matches, at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, Sylhet from November 28, and at Shere Bangla National Cricket Stadium, Mirpur from December 6.

These will be the first Test matches for both sides in the 2023-25 World Test Championship, leaving South Africa as the only team to begin their campaign.

bet365

Bangladesh won their last two Test matches, against Afghanistan and Ireland at home earlier this year, but neither was part of the WTC. In fact, they have never won a home Test match that was part of the WTC. Away from home, however, they famously won a Test match against New Zealand last year, at Mount Maunganui.

New Zealand, winner of the inaugural WTC edition of 2021-23, beat Sri Lanka and drew with England earlier this year, and drew a Test series in Pakistan before that. They did not win a single Test match away from home in the 2023-25 WTC.

Of the 17 Test matches between the sides, New Zealand have won 13 and Bangladesh only one. The record reads 3-0 in New Zealand’s favour, from six matches, in Bangladesh. However, the last three matches – one in 2008/09, two in 2013/14 – were all drawn.

BAN vs NZ Tests squad: Full team lists and injury updates for Bangladesh v New Zealand 2023

India’s massive total was possible because of, not in spite of Ruturaj Gaikwad

India’s massive total was possible because of, not in spite of Ruturaj Gaikwad
Ruturaj Gaikwad bats during his half-century in the second India-Australia T20I

Was Ruturaj Gaikwad’s half-century v Australia a help or a hindrance? Ben Gardner investigates.

Given that he was run out without facing in the first T20I, and given how hard-won chances are in any India side, even a second-string one, it’s understandable that Ruturaj Gaikwad wanted to make sure in the second T20I against Australia.

He registered a half-century – his fourth international cricket – but, with competition this tough, and T20 cricket having advanced in recent years, it’s not just milestones that matter anymore.

bet365 code=365_02695246]

That Gaikwad is vice-captain of this side and led India at the Asian Games is an indicator of his rising stature. But India have so rarely had a full complement to call on that nothing can be taken for granted.

As India racked up 235-4, with the rest of India’s lineup scoring at at least 160, you could hear the grumbles begin to be raised at Gaikwad’s 43-ball 58, a strike rate of 134.88.

India’s total is big enough that it should not matter, but given how keen they are to push the margins of what’s possible, could Gaikwad have done more? Or is it possible, in fact, that the opposite is true, that India scored 235 because of, rather than in spite of Gaikwad’s innings.

Let’s examine it from a few angles. First, it’s worth pointing out that not all slower innings are created equal. The batter who scores a single every ball and the batter who faces five dots and then hits a six are each scoring at a run a ball, but the former is allowing his partner much greater opportunity to affect the scoring rate.

Gaikwad’s innings sits more in the former category. He hit three fours and two sixes in his innings, meaning he made 34 off 38 non-boundary balls. Gaikwad has developed his game to become a faster scorer in recent IPL seasons, but seemed to make a conscious decision here to play the foil to his free-lowing partners, rather than match them stroke for stroke.

The effect of this is clear in how little of the strike he occupied. Gaikwad was out in the 20th over, but only faced 43 deliveries – just over 35 percent of the balls faced while he was at the crease. He might not have exploded, but he never got stuck either.

Another criticism of ‘anchors’, as they are often known, is that they eat up balls early on in the powerplay, when scoring should be at its easiest. However, while Gaikwad did face three of his seven dot balls in the powerplay, he still ended it with a strike rate of 150, notching 15 off 10 as Yashasvi Jaiswal went ballistic at the other end.

Three dots in the first over after the powerplay might be a small black mark, but that’s also hardly out of the ordinary, especially having lost a wicket just before the field went out. And from over seven until he was dismissed, he faced just one more dot ball.

The final criticism of anchors is that they go too late, having taken their time to get set, and it’s true that Gaikwad managed just one six between the end of the powerplay and the start of the final over, at which point he hit a six and then got out. But he also had very little of the strike at the death, facing just five balls from the end of the 15th to the start of the 20th over.

An element of caution is also justified by India’s shallow batting order, with Ravi Bishnoi, a proper tail-ender, carded to come in at No.8.

Gaikwad’s wasn’t the star showing, but it was an innings that allowed the rest of India’s ball-strikers full opportunity to flourish, while also giving them the security that if they did fall, a set batter would be there to carry on their work. He had a role, and he played it well.

Joe Root joins England captain Ben Stokes in skipping next Indian Premier League

Joe Root joins England captain Ben Stokes in skipping next Indian Premier League

Joe Root has followed the lead of England Test captain Ben Stokes by skipping next year’s Indian Premier League.

It was confirmed on Wednesday that Stokes would not appear for Chennai Super Kings in the 2024 edition of the IPL, with the 32-year-old citing the need to manage his fitness and workload.

Root has now joined his red-ball skipper in sitting out the Twenty20 tournament, which will run from March until the end of May.

Rajasthan Royals secured the services of Root at the 2023 mini-auction and he featured three times for the franchise earlier this year, but will not join up with the group that contains England white-ball captain Jos Buttler next year.

Royals director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara said: “During our retention conversations, Joe informed us of his decision to not take part in IPL 2024.

“Even in a short span of time, Joe was able to create such a positive impact on the franchise and the players around him.

“His energy around the group and the experience he brought to the Royals will be missed. We respect his decision totally and wish him success in everything he does.”

Root is set for a key role in England’s five-match Test series away to India, which starts on January 25.

Zimbabwe’s T20 World Cup hopes in tatters after Uganda upset

Zimbabwe’s T20 World Cup hopes in tatters after Uganda upset
Cyrus Kakuru of Uganda

Zimbabwe’s T20 World Cup 2024 qualification hopes took a major blow after Uganda beat them with five wickets and five balls in hand at Windhoek.

Zimbabwe had struck early to reduce Uganda to 12-2 before Alpesh Ramjani launched a counterattack, hitting four fours and two sixes in a 26-ball 40 out of a partnership of 49.

After Sean Williams snared Ramjani, one-drop batter Roger Mukasa hung around for a 33-ball 23 before Wesley Madhevere ran him out, leaving Uganda at 95-4.

bet365

At this point Dinesh Nakrani joined Riazat Ali Shah, and the pair added 38 in only four overs to help Uganda inch closer to a famous win. With a 28-ball 42 (five fours, one six), Ali Shah, in particular, played a key role.

Uganda needed 30 in the last three overs, but Ali Shah and Nakrani (14 not out in 10 balls, one four, one six) took 20 in the 18th over, bowled by Tendai Chatara, to swing the match in Uganda’s favour. By the time Richard Ngarava dismissed Ali Shah, it was too late.

Captain Sikandar Raza came to defend three in the last over, but the first ball went for four byes, sealing the match.

The defeat was a major blow for Zimbabwe, who had also lost their tournament opener. Hosts Namibia had restricted them to 132-8 and won with seven wickets and 32 balls in hand.

With two points from three matches, Zimbabwe are now fourth in the points table, immediately below Uganda (four in three matches). Namibia (net run rate +2.896) and Kenya (+0.188) are on six points each. None of the three other teams – Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania – has won a match yet.

Earlier in the match, Zimbabwe had stuttered to 136-7 after Uganda captain Brian Masaba opted to bowl at the United Cricket Club Ground. They were 71-4 after 12 overs before Raza slammed 48 in 39 balls (two fours, four sixes). For Uganda, medium-pacer Nakrani returned 3-14 from his four overs.

Steve Smith is running out of opportunities to reclaim his place in Australia’s best T20I XI

Steve Smith is running out of opportunities to reclaim his place in Australia’s best T20I XI
Steve Smith

Australia have won more white-ball trophies than any other side, but with the 50-over mission successfully completed, their attention must turn to the 20-over prize, and they need to finally decide whether Steve Smith fits into their plans.

Four days after the 2023 World Cup final, the run into next year’s men’s T20 World Cup started with an India-Australia five-match series. Smith was the only player who featured in both Australia’s World Cup final starting XI and the one that stepped out in Visakhapatnam for the first game of the series.

The match in itself was a thriller. Josh Inglis’ record-equalling double-century set the tone on a flat surface which saw India chase down 209 with a ball to spare. But, despite Inglis’ brilliance and Australia posting a mammoth score, Smith’s innings was a talking point.

bet365

He made 52 off 41 balls, falling to a comical run out after he slipped playing a scoop shot. The start to his innings was good, taking 14 runs off the first two overs and relieving the pressure off Matthew Short. But, as the innings continued, he looked increasingly disjointed, off strike for most of the next eight overs while Inglis heaved away at the other end. By the ten-over point, he’d scored ten runs off as many balls in the preceding eight overs, been dropped once and faced seven dot balls.

There were signs, as the innings entered its last five overs, that Smith was beginning to find his rhythm. In the four balls before he got out, he hit two fours and seemed intent on accelerating. But, having opened the innings, he only reached his half-century with the ball before he was dismissed in the 16th over. The match was also the first time Smith opened an innings in a T20I.

Australia have played four T20Is since their last match of the 2022 T20 World Cup. In their three-match whitewash over South Africa in September, Travis Head opened the batting alongside Short. With Head in the squad for the India series but rested for the first game, opening will more than likely be a stop-gap for Smith rather than a serious option to be Aaron Finch’s permanent replacement.

Smith didn’t play in Australia’s series against South Africa. Visakhapatnam was his first T20I in over a year, having only played one game in the 2022 World Cup. That game – Australia’s last of the tournament, with their fate already sealed – marked the end of a very un-Australian campaign. At that time, with Cam Green’s rise and Tim David’s run of form, Smith’s T20I career seemed to be hanging by a thread. His inclusion in this series, however, opens a door for him to reclaim his position ahead of next year’s World Cup.

There should be no doubt over how good Smith is at what he does. He has an incredible across-format record and, in white-ball cricket, has played the anchor role effectively for Australia for years. He also hit back-to-back centuries in the BBL last season, the second coming off just 54 balls. But, there’s no escaping that he hasn’t been able to replicate that fire-power on the international T20 stage.

The 50 he scored on Tuesday was his first in four years and only his fifth in all of his 54 matches in the format. Looking back to the 2021 World Cup, while he played an important innings against South Africa in Australia’s tournament opener, in three out of their final four matches he wasn’t required to bat. While Smith is an effective anchor, having a specialist batter to do that job in T20Is is becoming less and less important, in favour of a player who can both soak up pressure and explode at the end. Smith is the former, but he isn’t the latter.

With Mitchell Marsh the newly appointed captain, Head in place at the top, Inglis showing what he’s capable of and, when the ODI World Cup winners return, a settled middle-order, Australia have the luxury of not needing Smith to settle tremors in their batting. The versatility of their lineup is enough to squeeze him out of the first XI. But, with a packed calendar and three T20I series to go before Australia start their T20 World Cup campaign, there could be opportunities for Smith to snatch his place back, and go from squad member to first pick. If he is to do that, this India series is one of the chances he needs to take.
