MI vs RR: IPL 2024 team news

Mumbai Indians have won both their matches, but this is the first time they are playing at home. Unhappy with the decision to replace Rohit Sharma at the helm, the fans have voiced their displeasure during the matches, particularly at new captain Hardik Pandya. Whether that will intensify or dissipate at home is to be seen.

Mumbai typically pick up pace later in their campaigns, and will back themselves for an encore. Neither of their defeats has been of a nature that should result in changes. They lost a close game against Gujarat Titans, while the IPL record run-fest against Sunrisers Hyderabad can be called an aberration. Their fortune is likely to change at some point.

Despite twin failures from both their famed openers, Rajasthan Royals have won four points from two games. Both matches were in the balance ten overs before close, but Rajasthan’s superb death bowling turned out to be decisive. Riyan Parag 2.0 has also helped them address their perennial void at No.4, while they have so far been able to cover up the lack of all-rounders with the Impact Players.

MI vs RR: Prediction for today’s IPL match

A difficult prediction, for a home match can work both ways for MI. It is going to be a close call, where MI’s familiarity with the flat wicket and small boundaries may give them a slight edge over RR.

Watch: 46.4.6 – Vintage MS Dhoni turns back the clock in final over assault against Anrich Nortje

Watch: 46.4.6 – Vintage MS Dhoni turns back the clock in final over assault against Anrich Nortje
MS Dhoni takes on Anrich Nortje in IPL 2024

At Visakhapatnam, MS Dhoni slammed two fours and two sixes in the last over of an IPL 2024 match against Anrich Nortje today (March 31).

Ahead of the 2024 IPL, MS Dhoni had stepped down as Chennai Super Kings captain, handing over the reins to Ruturaj Gaikwad. He did not need to bat in the first two matches of the season as Chennai beat both Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans with ease.

Delhi Capitals, however, provided a sterner challenge after Prithvi Shaw (43 in 27 balls), David Warner (52 in 35), and Rishabh Pant (51 in 32) took them to 191-5.

Khaleel Ahmed then took out the Chennai openers quickly before Ajinkya Rahane (45 in 30 balls) kept Chennai in the game, but Mukesh Kumar’s (3-21) triple-wicket burst turned the tide in Delhi’s favour.

That was also when, with an improbable 72 needed in 23 balls, MS Dhoni walked out bat for the tournament amidst thundering applause from the Visakhapatnam crowd.

He pulled the first ball he faced, from Mukesh, for four. He cut the second ball, but Khaleel grassed the chance. He got the strike back, and blasted the last ball to the cover fence. In the next over, he made room and lofted Khaleel over the extra-cover boundary for six.

The match was sealed when Anrich Nortje ran in to bowl the last over of the match. With 41 to score, there was only the net run rate to play for. Dhoni smashed the first ball to the cover boundary, hit the second ball one handed over mid-wicket for six, hammered the fourth ball to the long-on fence, and hit another six over extra-cover to round things off.

Dhoni finished on an unbeaten 16-ball 37 with four fours and three sixes, his highest score since 2022.

‘Rizwan was the best choice‘ – Shahid Afridi ‘surprised’ by Babar Azam’s appointment as Pakistan captain

‘Rizwan was the best choice‘ – Shahid Afridi ‘surprised’ by Babar Azam’s appointment as Pakistan captain
Shahid Afridi surprised at Babar Azam being named captain

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi was surprised at Babar Azam being named Pakistan captain for the white-ball formats.

Babar Azam had resigned as Pakistan captain from all formats on November 15, 2023, shortly after they were eliminated from the World Cup in India. The Pakistan Cricket Board appointed Shan Masood as their Test captain, and put Shaheen Shah Afridi in charge of the T20I side. With no ODI planned until late 2024, they did not appoint anyone to lead them in the format. They also overhauled their entire support staff.

Since then, Pakistan toured Australia to play three Tests and New Zealand for five T20Is. They lost the first 0-3 and the latter 1-4. Since then, during and after the 2024 PSL, they changed several personnel again, while Imad Wasim and Mohammad Amir made themselves available to play for Pakistan.

With the T20 World Cup only two months away, there were speculations over a change in captaincy in the format. The race had several forerunners: Shaheen could have stayed on; vice-captain Shadab Khan could have been promoted; Mohammad Rizwan could have been rewarded for leading his team to three consecutive PSL finals; and, of course, Babar was in the mix.

Today (March 31, 2024), four and a half months after his resignation, the PCB reappointed Babar as captain for both ODIs and T20Is following “unanimous recommendation” from the selectors.

The decision drew reaction from former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi. “I am surprised by the decision by very experienced cricketers in the selection committee,” he confessed on social media.

“I still believe that if change was necessary than Rizwan was the best choice! But since now the decision has been made I offer my full support and best wishes to team Pakistan and Babar Azam.”

Pakistan will play 12 T20Is ahead of the World Cup – five against New Zealand at home followed by three in Ireland and England.

GT vs SRH, DC vs CSK: IPL 2024 team news

Sunrisers Hyderabad have amassed nearly 500 runs across their two matches. However, the Gujarat Titans may put the tourists to test by preparing a surface that will assist their spinners. They can add Noor Ahmad to Rashid Khan and Sai Kishore: spin is not a strength for the Sunrisers.

Delhi Capitals have a strong bowling attack and several power hitters, but they have not threatened any opposition yet. Perhaps it is time to add Prithvi Shaw to the top and use Mitchell Marsh at three to take the Chennai Super Kings attack heads on. Shivam Dube has been destructive against spin, but Axar Patel and Kuldeep will provide a stern challenge.

CSK: Ruturaj Gaikwad (c), Rachin Ravindra, Ajinkya Rahane, Shivam Dube, Daryl Mitchell, Ravindra Jadeja, Sameer Rizvi, MS Dhoni (wk), Deepak Chahar, Tushar Deshpande, Matheesha Pathirana. Impact player: Mustafizur Rahman/Moeen Ali

GT vs SRH, DC vs CSK: Prediction for today’s IPL match

Even at home, GT will find things difficult against the rampant SRH batting unit. A slower pitch may keep them in the game.

DC have not impressed yet despite having a good unit on paper. Their “home” match is at Visakhapatnam, not Delhi – and with their all-round strength, CSK will be favourites.

Watch: Mayank Yadav, who clocked 155.8kph on his IPL debut for Lucknow Super Giants against Punjab Kings, ended with 3-27 today

Watch: Mayank Yadav, who clocked 155.8 kph (96.8 mph) on his IPL debut for Lucknow Super Giants against Punjab Kings, ended with 3-27 today (March 30) in a brilliant display of fast bowling.

The 21-year-old Mayank, who was bought by LSG in the IPL 2022 mega-auction, made his debut against PBKS and impressed with a 150kph ball in his first over. An over later, he bowled a 155.8kph ball to Shikhar Dhawan and picked up his first IPL wicket soon after.

Punjab, chasing 200 for a win, got off to a fine start, reaching 102 in 11.3 overs with Jonny Bairstow scoring 42 in 28 and Dhawan making a fifty. Bairstow was the first to depart, falling to Mayank on the fourth ball of the 12th over. The quick sent down a shorter ball on the middle and leg stump and the batter looked to go for a pull. He ended up miscuing it to deep mid-wicket as Mayank got his first success in the IPL.

Punjab’s innings went downhill thereafter, as they lost their next four wickets within three overs, with Mayank striking twice in succession.

He dismissed Prabhsimran Singh in his third over of the innings with yet another short ball. Prabhsimran seemed hurried by pace and only managed a top edge to mid-on. Jitesh Sharma was out in the next over in a similar manner: Mayank banged in short yet again, the batter got a top edge to mid-wicket where Naveen-ul-Haq, who also caught Prabhsimran, held on.

Punjab eventually were restricted to 178-5 in 20 overs and lost their second game in a row. Mayank also won the Player of the Match for his efforts.

Watch: IPL debutant Mayank Yadav clocks 96.8 mph, the fastest ball of IPL 2024 so far
Mayank Yadav bowled the fastest ball of IPL 2024

Watch: Mayank Yadav, a little-known speedster on IPL debut, created waves with a scorching spell that included the fastest delivery bowled in the tournament so far.

Along the way, he pocketed Jonny Bairstow, Prabhsimran Singh and Jitesh Sharma, unleashing his rapid pace on the Punjab Kings lineup and keeping them under check in their chase of 200. He finished with figures of 4-0-27-3, having broken a century stand with his first scalp.

The highlight of his spell was a delivery to Shikhar Dhawan, clocked at 155.8kph – or 96.8mph – now the fastest delivery in IPL 2024. Dhawan tried to make room, but could not match the pace of the 21-year-old, with the ball whistling past him on its way to wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock, who applauded him as soon as he received it.

Soon after, Mayank was celebrated across social media, getting plaudits and recognition for the game-changing – and extremely rapid – spell. Regularly topping 150kph, a rarity among Indian quicks, he targeted the batters’ body, also testing them with short stuff.

Dhawan was eventually dismissed for a 50-ball 70, having seen his teammates succumb to Mayank’s raw pace. Among those impressed was former Australia speedster Brett Lee, one of the quickest ever, who said that India had found “its fastest bowler”.

Harry Brook set to return for start of Yorkshire’s County Championship campaign

Harry Brook set to return for start of Yorkshire’s County Championship campaign

England batter Harry Brook is set to be available for the beginning of Yorkshire’s Vitality County Championship campaign, according to White Rose head coach Ottis Gibson.

Brook withdrew from England’s Test tour of India in January due to personal reasons and, following the death of his grandmother Pauline last month, he pulled out of a stint with Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League to be close to his family.

He has signalled to Yorkshire he is ready to resume his playing career, though, and Gibson is hopeful Brook will make his comeback for their Division Two opener against Leicestershire, starting on April 5.

Brook, who has not played any competitive cricket this year, could feature in a handful of matches in the championship before linking up with England ahead of their T20 World Cup title defence in June.

“Now that Brooky isn’t going to the IPL, I suspect he’s going to be available to us for the first few games, including Leicestershire,” Gibson said in quotes on Yorkshire’s website. “He loves playing for us.”

Gibson suggested Yorkshire’s prospects could be enhanced further in the early rounds by the availability of Joe Root, who like Brook excused himself from this year’s IPL.

“Rooty is also going to be available for some games in that early period,” Gibson added. “Having those two playing for us would be special.”

England, meanwhile, have slipped to the bottom of the World Test Championship standings after Sri Lanka completed a 328-run thrashing of Bangladesh inside four days in Sylhet.

Joe Root could also be available for Yorkshire in the early season (Mike Egerton/PA)

Although England have prevailed in three of their 10 Tests with Sri Lanka gaining a first triumph in three fixtures in the 2023-25 cycle, teams are ranked according to the percentage of points won.

Hindering England’s progress was a 19-point deduction for slow over-rates in four of last year’s five Ashes Test in a thrilling series which finished 2-2. England have just been beaten 4-1 in India.

Had that not been applied, England, third in the International Cricket Council Test rankings behind India and Australia, would sit in fifth place in the the nine-team World Test Championship.

Ben Stokes’ side have a dozen matches remaining before the final at Lord’s in June 2025, starting with three-Test series at home against both the West Indies and Sri Lanka this summer and winter tours to Pakistan and New Zealand before the year is out.

England have failed to reach the final in either of the first two editions, finishing fourth in the 2021-23 cycle – having languished at the bottom of the table for a period before the appointment of Stokes as captain and Brendon McCullum as head coach led to a turnaround in results.

England Women wrap up 4-1 series victory in New Zealand

England Women wrapped up a 4-1 T20 series victory as they beat New Zealand by five wickets in the fifth match at Wellington.

Chasing 137, captain Heather Knight and Nat Sciver-Brunt put together a crucial 57-run partnership for the fourth wicket to put England in control.

England’s bowlers made early inroads by reducing the hosts to 31 for four, Sciver-Brunt taking two for 24.

Brooke Halliday hit 33 before holing out to Alice Capsey off Sophie Ecclestone, who finished with three for 30, while wicketkeeper Izzy Gaze reached an unbeaten 51 off the final ball as they lifted the total to 136 for six.

Maia Bouchier, who finished with an England record for a series with 223 runs, fell early in the reply,

Capsey (25) and Danni Wyatt (21) fell before the halfway point, but Sciver-Brunt (31) and Knight took the game away from New Zealand.

Knight fell for 35 with five needed to win, Sophia Dunkley taking just two balls to finish the job with seven deliveries to spare.

The teams start a three-match ODI series in Wellington on Monday.

Explained: Why RR were not wrong in fielding a fifth overseas player vs DC

Explained: Why RR were not wrong in fielding a fifth overseas player vs DC
RR fifth overseas player controversy

The Rajasthan Royals-Delhi Capitals game had a controversial start to the second innings today (March 28), as the DC camp complained that RR were violating the playing conditions by fielding a fifth overseas player.

RR recovered from 36-3 in the eighth over to end up with 185 after the tactical masterstroke of promoting R Aswhin paid off big time. Riyan Parag finished unbeaten on 84, his highest IPL score.

At the innings break, RR employed their impact sub, bringing in Nandre Burger for Shimron Hetmyer. Since they had named only three overseas players in their starting XI, this was a move they were allowed to do.

However, controversy arose when along with Burger, Rovman Powell also made his way on the field as a substitute fielder. While Burger was the impact sub for Hetmyer, Powell came on to substitute for Parag, who probably needed a breather after being at the crease for nearly 15 overs.

Play was stopped two balls into the innings as Delhi complained about the extra overseas player on the field. Ricky Ponting was seen having animated discussions with match officials outside the boundary line, which reminded viewers of a similar incident from the RR vs DC game in 2022. Powell was involved then as well, with Rishabh Pant threatening to call his batters back after a waist-high full-toss was not adjudged as a no-ball.

Did RR violate any rules by fielding Rovman Powell?

Technically, Powell was the fifth overseas player RR used in the match, but they were not in violation of any playing conditions.

Article 1.2.6 of IPL’s playing conditions states that there can’t be more than four overseas players “on the field of play at any time during any match”. Since RR had named only three overseas players to start with, and Hetmyer had not taken the field, even with Powell on, they only had four overseas players on the field.

“A team may not have more than four overseas players on the field of play at any time during any Match,” reads article 1.2.6. “Thus, if the team names the maximum 4 Overseas players in its starting XI, an Overseas player may only take the field as a substitute fielder if the player that he is replacing is an Overseas player.

“If the team names less than 4 Overseas players in its starting XI, Overseas players may only enter the field of play as substitute fielders to the extent that by doing so, they do not take the total number of Overseas players representing that team on the field to more than 4.”

Article 1.10 of the Impact Player regulations state that “if a team introduces an overseas player as an Impact Player in a match, in no circumstance can a 5th overseas player take the field.”

While the wording here might be slightly confusing, it’s consistent with article 1.2.6 of the playing conditions in that “in no circumstance can a 5th overseas player take the field” is equivalent to “may not have more than 4 Overseas players on the field of play at any time”. At no point did the number of overseas players on the field for RR exceed four.

Powell eventually came off after afters Parag returned. Despite a late scare by Tristan Stubbs and Axar Patel, RR were able to safely win the game by 12 runs.

England will not adopt negative approach after humbling in India – Zak Crawley

England will not adopt negative approach after humbling in India – Zak Crawley

Zak Crawley insists England will not adopt a “negative” approach after their recent 4-1 series defeat in India but acknowledged they must learn when to absorb pressure.

India inflicted the first series loss of the Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum era after they stormed back from going one down in Hyderabad to win the last four Tests in comprehensive fashion.

It sparked debate over England’s aggressive ‘Bazball’ style following a string of batting collapses and head coach McCullum accepted they had to refine their style moving forward.

Crawley said: “We always talk about absorbing pressure and putting pressure back on.

“The last couple of years we’ve done the putting pressure back on pretty well and we’ve spoken about maybe picking those moments to absorb at the right times as well. We can certainly refine that.

“That’s not to say we’re going to get more negative. We will still try to play the way we have and try to score quickly but yeah, picking those moments where they’re on top and we need to absorb.

“Or even the other way where they’re on top and you feel like you need to put it back on. It is just getting it right.

“(Stokes) spoke about it after the series where we need a little bit of refinement. It is not big changes.

“We just need to make sure we stay positive and don’t let a tough result get in the way of what we’re done really well over the last couple of years.”

England’s strategy of moving the game forward quickly with higher run-rates and early declarations took the cricket world by storm as they won 10 of their first 11 Tests under Stokes and McCullum.

However, seven defeats have followed from the next 12 matches and a lack of a ruthless streak has cost England at times.

After England posted a first innings total of 353 in the fourth Test in Ranchi, they reduced India to 177 for seven but let the hosts off the hook and, instead of setting up a series decider, they crumbled to a crushing five-wicket defeat.

“We genuinely believed in ourselves and thought we could win the series,” Crawley, speaking at a sponsors event for Swiss watch brand Rado, the England and Wales Cricket Board’s official timing partner, admitted.

“We should have won in Ranchi, I think, to make it 2-2 and then you never know how the last one goes.

“When the series goes like that, it is always hard to wrestle the momentum back but we were in the series massively and we always believed.

“We certainly weren’t in the games when I was in India last time (in 2021), so we gave ourselves a good chance and we weren’t quite clinical enough like they were.

“Over five days, their skills are always going to come out and they are a phenomenal team. It was a really enjoyable tour though, we gave it a good crack and there is a lot to learn from.”

A beacon of light again for England was Crawley, who for the second series in a row led the scoring charts for his team.

The Kent batter was notably labelled as a player whose “skillset is not to be a consistent cricketer” by McCullum in 2022.

A string of low scores increased the external noise around his position prior to last summer’s Ashes but the 26-year-old always retained the faith of England’s key decision-makers.

Now, 12 months on, Crawley has hit seven 50+ scores and averaged 46.7 against the two best attacks in the world, which included a sensational 189 at Old Trafford last July.

“I feel in a lot better place than I was,” Crawley added.

“I’m not trying to put too much pressure on any games to be honest. When I am playing for England or for Kent, I just try and turn up with the same process.

“I am trying to embrace failure more and accepting it is part of the game and sticking with what I do well.”

Shivam Dube is becoming increasingly hard to ignore, but can he fit into the Indian XI for the T20 World Cup?

Shivam Dube is becoming increasingly hard to ignore, but can he fit into the Indian XI for the T20 World Cup?
Shivam Dube in T20 WC

Shivam Dube has lit up the IPL ever since he’s donned the yellow jersey and is only improving in his hyper-specialised, spin-bashing role. Naman Agarwal examines if there can be a spot for him in India’s T20 World Cup XI right after IPL 2024.

The basic premise of cricket says that a wicket is a good result for the bowling side, right? Sai Kishore, however, found out otherwise at Chepauk on Tuesday (March 27) when he dismissed Ajinkya Rahane. Next in at No.4 was Shivam Dube. Against a left-arm spinner, with the score reading 104-2 in the eleventh over that had five balls remaining, Dube had the license to go for the kill.

Sai Kishore’s response suggested that he knew that. He darted one well outside off at a three-quarter length, the go-to defensive option for spinners in limited overs cricket. But Dube’s six-foot-four frame helped him get underneath it regardless, and the ball flew like a zooming missile over long-on.

It was the 37th six he had hit in the IPL since last year, the most by any batter, steering clear of Faf du Plessis, with whom he was tied on 36 before his first ball against GT. One ball later, that count would go up to 38 as realisation must have dawned on Sai Kishore that wickets might not always be a bowler’s best friend (with all due respect to Rahane, who has struck at 96.3 against left-arm orthodox since last year).

While the two sixes off the first two balls hooked viewers in, the manner in which Dube’s next few boundaries came gave glimpses of his evolution. He went on to score 51 off 23, hitting three more sixes and two more fours along the way. They included a massive six off a Rashid Khan googly, a hook over long leg off a Spencer Johnson bouncer, and two pulls along the ground against Johnson and Mohit Sharma to the fence.

Shivam Dube in T20 WC

Dube’s specialised spin-bashing, six-hitting role in the middle order at the Chennai Super Kings has been formulated to suit his strengths. He made his mark in domestic cricket with his long levers and clean striking ability, which got him an IPL deal with the RCB in 2019. However, he didn’t feel nearly as free during that stint, or for that matter at Rajasthan Royals, as he is doing here at CSK.

“This franchise is something different from all others,” Dube said while receiving the Player of the Match award against GT. “They are giving me the freedom. They want me to do better and I also want to win some matches.”

From 27 innings for CSK, Dube already has 792 runs at a strike rate of 158 with six half-centuries. For RCB and RR combined, he scored 399 runs from 22 outings at a strike rate of 121 with just one fifty-plus score. For CSK, he has hit a six (57 in total) every 8.7 deliveries, compared to the 15 for RR and RCB.

His transformation fetched him a second India call-up last year after the IPL, as they tried a whole bunch of players in order to zero in on the World Cup prospects. He played eight games, batted five times, and was dismissed only once, averaging a massive 171 and striking at 151.32, including two back-t0-back fifties against Afghanistan earlier this year.

So far, he has done everything in his control to make a case for himself for the T20 World Cup in the Americas. But India have a plethora of batting options to choose from, especially with seniors Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma also making themselves available.

Assuming Rohit opens with Yashasvi Jaiswal, the incumbent opener, Kohli bats three, and Suryakumar Yadav bats four, there is hardly wiggle room to accommodate someone like Dube.

Two of the three remaining batting slots will go a wicketkeeper – there are six of them competing for that role – and an all-rounder, presumably Hardik Pandya. That leaves just one slot, for which India would like someone who can offer something with the ball so that they are not handicapped with just five bowling options in a game.

Shivam Dube in T20 WC

Dube does bowl the occasional medium-pace, but teams in the past have made the mistake of considering him an all-rounder, which he is not. He is an out-and-out six-hitter who can roll his arm over if and when absolutely necessary, as CSK’s usage of him has shown.

So what more can Dube do to force his way in as a pure batter?

There’s not really much of an answer to that other than to keep doing what he has been since the last two seasons, which is to marry consistency with a volatile role, two aspects of the game that don’t really go together.

Along with the team environment and the leadership setup, it is also CSK’s squad construction that allows Dube the freedom to launch as soon as he feels comfortable at the crease. They bat extremely deep, which means if instead of the middle of the bat, Dube’s first-ball slog against Sai Kishore finds the top edge and lands in the hands of a fielder, he wouldn’t be ostracised for it in the change room. Instead, he’d be backed for playing to his strengths and the team requirements.

The Indian T20I squad is different. They have always struggled with batting depth and are going to do so again come the next World Cup given the lack of T20 batting ability of their main bowlers. In such a setup, the value of each wicket becomes greater, reducing the scope to provide roles with high variance and volatility to batters in the top seven.

That makes it all the more necessary for Dube to show not just the occasional high-ceiling performance that he is capable of, but to also rack up somewhere around 500 runs in the ongoing IPL season to instill confidence in the Indian management that he can be at the crease for a good time and a long time.

Of course, there’s still a lot of time left before the team is selected for the T20 World Cup. By then, pecking orders may change, injuries may happen, and Dube’s road to the tournament may clear up. But those are things he doesn’t need to worry about. All he needs to do is to keep following the most basic premise of all in cricket: see the ball, hit the ball, and results will follow, like they have for him lately.

On this day in 2018: Australian trio banned after ball-tampering saga

On this day in 2018: Australian trio banned after ball-tampering saga

Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft were all given lengthy bans for their part in Australia’s ball-tampering scandal six years ago.

Captain Smith and vice-captain Warner were both handed 12-month suspensions while Bancroft, the batsman who was caught on camera attempting to change the condition of the ball using sandpaper during the third Test against South Africa, was banned for nine months.

Cricket Australia chairman David Peever said: “The CA board understands and shares the anger of fans and the broader Australian community about these events.

“They go to the integrity and reputation of Australian Cricket and Australian sport and the penalties must reflect that.

“These are significant penalties for professional players and the board does not impose them lightly. It is hoped that following a period of suspension, the players will be able to return to playing the game they love and eventually rebuild their careers.”

Smith and Bancroft gave a press conference after the third day’s play where they admitted a premeditated attempt to tamper with the ball.

Smith spoke of a “leadership group” making the decision to tamper with the ball and, in announcing the severe punishments, CA revealed Warner, 31, was charged with devising the plan, instructing a junior player – Bancroft – to carry it out and demonstrating how to do it.

Smith gave a tearful press conference on his return to Australia, saying: “I know I’ll regret this for the rest of my life, I’m absolutely gutted. I hope in time I can earn back respect and forgiveness.

“I’ve been so privileged and honoured to represent my country and captain Australia. Cricket is the greatest game in the world and it’s been my life – I hope it can be again. I’m absolutely devastated.”

Smith and Warner both returned to the Australia side at the Cricket World Cup in 2019, with the former made vice-captain of the Test side in 2021, while Bancroft played for his country again in the Ashes series the same summer.

IPL five-wicket hauls: List of players with a five-for in Indian Premier League

IPL five-wicket hauls: List of players with a five-for in Indian Premier League
Sunrisers Hyderabad's Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowls during the Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 cricket match between Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on May 15, 2023.

The Indian Premier League has witnessed some explosive batting performances over the years, but there have been times when bowlers took centre stage. Here’s the list of bowlers who have taken five-wicket hauls in the IPL.

Sohail Tanvir was the first bowler to register a five-wicket haul in the tournament. In the inaugural season, when Pakistan players were allowed to participate, Tanvir took 6-14 against Chennai Super Kings in the inaugural season in 2008. With 22 wickets, he ended as the season’s highest-wicket taker, helping his team to a title win.

While there have been 32 occasions when a player has taken a five-for in the history of IPL, only three players have managed to achieve the feat twice – James Faulkner (2013), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2017 and 2023) and Jaydev Unadkat (2013 and 2017).

The best bowling figures belong to pacer Alzarri Joseph. He claimed 6-12 on IPL debut, for Mumbai Indians against Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2019.

Watch: MS Dhoni defies age and gravity to take flying, full-length stunner in IPL 2024

Watch: MS Dhoni defies age and gravity to take flying, full-length stunner in IPL 2024
MS Dhoni flying catch

Watch: MS Dhoni flew full-length to his right to take a stunning catch during the CSK vs GT clash in Chennai today (March 26).

Playing their second game of the season, Chennai Super Kings batted first and posted a huge total of 206. Each of their top-seven entered double digits, with Shivam Dube top-scoring with 51 off 23 in a knock that included two fours and five sixes.

In response, Gujarat Titans lost captain Shubman Gill in the third over, lbw off Deepak Chahar. Wriddhiman Saha followed soon after, leaving GT at 34-2 in the fifth over.

Ruturaj Gaikawad brought Daryl Mitchell to bowl the eighth over of the innings. His first two balls fetched three runs before the Chennai crowd erupted on the third ball.

Vijay Shankar edged a full ball through to MS Dhoni behind the stumps, who went airborne to his right to complete a brilliant catch with both hands, ending Shankar’s knock for 12.

Dhoni is yet to bat in IPL 2024, but has already pulled off two memorable dismissals from behind the stumps, having run out Anuj Rawat in CSK’s previous game against RCB as the batters tried to steal a bye.

Ollie Pope ‘itching’ to get back scoring runs after ‘frustrating’ tour of India

Ollie Pope ‘itching’ to get back scoring runs after ‘frustrating’ tour of India

England batter Ollie Pope is “itching” to play again after reflecting on the mistakes he made during a frustrating tour of India as an individual and a team.

Pope starred in a remarkable first Test win in Hyderabad with a sparkling 196, but failed to go beyond 39 in his next eight innings and was out for a pair in Ranchi.

It was a similar story for a number of his team-mates with India able to win the final four Tests comprehensively to inflict the first series defeat of the Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum reign.

The series marked Pope’s return to action after he dislocated his right shoulder during the Ashes last summer.

While the 26-year-old spent most of the winter on the road, he was back training for Surrey on Monday and is eyeing plenty of Vitality County Championship runs before the home Test series with West Indies in July.

“Straight back into it – our choice. I feel pretty fresh,” Pope said at a sponsors event for Swiss watch brand Rado, the England and Wales Cricket Board’s official timing partner.

“Obviously I had that seven months out and leaving that India tour, if I had scored another three 70s or something, I might be feeling slightly differently but I almost feel frustrated.

“I feel like I’m in really good nick without putting together those scores, so hopefully I can go and find that rhythm of putting together big scores… at three, unless Stewie (Alec Stewart, Surrey director of cricket) drops me!

“I might miss one in that first seven or eight games, but yes, I’m itching to get back and just scoring runs and representing Surrey.”

The first assignment for Pope could be a battle with Australia spinner Nathan Lyon, who has signed for Lancashire, in next week’s opener at Old Trafford.

Pope has faced plenty of spin this year and, after he started the India series with the fifth Test hundred of his career, anticipated a productive series.

However, rather than add to his tally of centuries, England’s vice-captain suffered a string of low scores, with his frenetic nature at the start of his innings a major talking point.

“I understand it,” he said. “I think the issue for me in that series is something that I’ve worked hard on in England and I’ve got better, I think, to make myself a bit more consistent in these English conditions.

“In that second innings of the first Test when I made that score, I tried to be busy, so I think it is a fine line. When it doesn’t go right, it looks frenetic. When it does go right, it looks busy and good.

India England Cricket
Pope walks off after being dismissed on day one of the fifth Test in Dharamshala (Ashwini Bhatia/AP)

“I wanted to find a way of putting pressure back on the Indian spinners to get them to bowl more bad balls, which worked perfectly on that pitch on the first Test but probably wasn’t required as much on the pitches in the rest of the series.

“So, I think that was probably my biggest mistake that I made.

“Rather than having to feel like I’ve got to find a way of getting them off their best ball, you might get the odd ball but you can always trust your defence a little bit more.

“I remember leaving that first Test and thought, ‘I’m going to score a heck of a lot of runs in this series’, and that’s the frustrating thing from my point of view – that I didn’t adapt my game quick enough in different conditions.”

Pope will aim to make amends this summer and help ‘Bazball’ get back on track after losing six of their last 10 Tests to India and Australia.

“At the end of day two in three of the games, we were right side by side with India and that’s probably the most frustrating thing about it,” Pope reflected on the 4-1 loss.

“We just weren’t able to drive it home like they were when they got a lead. That’s why we look back on that series with a lot of – I’m not going to say regret – but just disappointment.

“If we want to become the best team in the world, we need to find a way of winning in India and Australia really.

“And to do that we need to consistently be scoring big runs, which we’ve done at times, and taking 20 wickets every game.

“Tightening a few loose screws will make us a much better team and allow us to hopefully drive games forward.”

Watch: Chennai Super King’s Sameer Rizvi smoked his first ball in the IPL for a huge six off Rashid Khan en route to a blistering six ball cameo

Watch: Chennai Super King’s (CSK) Sameer Rizvi smoked his first ball in the IPL for a huge six off Rashid Khan en route to a blistering six ball cameo against Gujarat Titans (GT) today (March 26).

CSK, who were put into bat by Shubman Gill after the Gujarat skipper fumbled with his words at the toss, were led by openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rachin Ravindra, both of whom scored 46 before a 23-ball 51 by Shivam Dube took Chennai towards a daunting total. Dube was dismissed on the second ball of the 19th over, which saw youngster Sameer Rizvi walk out to the field, being promoted over Ravindra Jadeja.

Read: Who is Sameer Rizvi, the 20-year-old Chennai Super Kings spent INR 8.4 crore on?

The 20-year-old Rizvi, who plays for Uttar Pradesh in domestic cricket, was embroiled in a bidding war during the auction ahead of the season and was eventually bought for INR 8.4 crore by the franchise, highlighting the talent he possesses.

Rizvi did not get an opportunity to bat in CSK’s first game of the season against RCB but validated his team’s trust in him during his short stay at the crease against Gujarat Titans.

The first ball he faced, against Rashid, was slog-swept over deep backward square leg as he got off the mark in the IPL in style. He ran a two on the next delivery before smashing another six on the last ball of the over. Rashid sent down a fuller ball outside the off stump and Rizvi danced down the track and cleared long-off as he raced away to 14 in four balls.

He was eventually dismissed two balls later but ensured CSK ended on a flourish, helping them post 206-6 on the board.

Rizvi has played 12 T20s thus far, scoring 295 runs with a high score of 75* and an average of 49.16. He has a strike rate of 134.70.

CSK vs GT: IPL 2024 team news

The two teams had clashed in the 2023 final, where Chennai had triumphed in a last-ball finish.

Both teams have started their respective campaigns with wins at home, but Gujarat will now have to travel to CSK’s famed Chepauk fortress. However, GT will be in familiar territory as well, for their squad features several local cricketers, including Sai Sudharsan and Sai Kishore, stars of the last match.

Gujarat’s strong spin attack makes them a stronger threat to Chennai than Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who struggled in Chepauk in the season opener. If they use the Impact Player judiciously, they can call upon Noor Ahmad to team up with Rashid Khan and Sai Kishore. Additionally, Mohit Sharma demonstrated his ability to take the pace off the ball at the death, a quality that is likely to come in handy on the slow Chepauk surface.

Despite all that, they are likely to find Chennai difficult to defeat at their den. The hosts have most boxes checked. They have been further boosted by the arrival of Matheesha Pathirana, though they are likely to stick to Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Maheesh Theekshana, and Mustafizur Rahman as their overseas players.

GT: Shubman Gill (c), Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Sai Sudharsan, Azmatullah Omarzai, Vijay Shankar, David Miller, Rahul Tewatia, Rashid Khan, Sai Kishore, Umesh Yadav, Mohit Sharma.

CSK vs GT: Prediction for today’s IPL match

This should be a close contest, but Chennai will hold home advantage. Of teams to have played 20 home matches, no team comes remotely close to their win-loss ratio of 2.030 (67 wins, 33 defeats). Gujarat have played only once here – in 2023 – and lost as the Pathirana and Jadeja had 8-0-46-4 between them.

‘Still got it I guess’ – Virat Kohli fires back at Kevin Pietersen’s suggestion over his T20 World Cup place

‘Still got it I guess’ – Virat Kohli fires back at Kevin Pietersen’s suggestion over his T20 World Cup place
Virat Kohli and Kevin Pietersen

Virat Kohli took aim at critics of his status in India’s T20I side in his post-match interview, after he put in a player of the match performance in Royal Challengers Bangalore’s win over Punjab Kings today (March 25).

RCB claimed a thrilling victory in Bengaluru, with Dinesh Karthik hitting 28 off ten balls at the back end of the innings to seal the result in the final over. Kohli scored 77 off 49 balls opening the batting with wickets falling around him.

Faf du Plessis and Cameron Green were both out in the powerplay, with Rajat Patidar and Glenn Maxwell both falling within two balls of each other. That left Kohli to anchor the innings. He was out off the last ball of the 16th over having hit two sixes and 11 fours in his innings, his 51st IPL half-century.

After the match, Kohli dominated the awards and received the orange cap, with 98 runs after two rounds of competition. Speaking to Harsha Bhogle on his performance, Kohli said: “I know my name is quite attached to just promoting the game in many parts of the world when it comes to T20 cricket, but I have still got it I guess.”

Kohli’s comment is in the context of the questions over his place in India’s T20I side. With a T20 World Cup on the horizon, Kohli has only played two T20Is for India since November 2022. He has also reportedly been asked to bat more aggressively in the format to secure his place.

Previously while commentating in IPL 2024, Kevin Pietersen said: “You want someone like Virat Kohli to grow the game in America and globally,” suggesting that Kohli should be picked for the 2024 T20 World Cup, to be played in the USA and the West Indies, for the good of the game regardless of his performances.

In response, Ravi Shastri said: “You have to build the team to win the tournament and trophy, not to grow the game. If you win the trophy,  automatically the game will grow.”

Kohli was extremely candid during the post-match presentation. On getting loud cheers from the home crowd while receiving the orange cap, Kohli asked them to not be over-excited about it: “Don’t get over-excited. It’s only been two games. I know what this means.”

When asked to keep wearing the orange cap, Kohli said that he is not driven by stuff like that any more. “I don’t play for caps and all to be honest,” he said. “It’s, for me, an opportunity to help my team. That’s the only thing that I have given to Indian cricket, to RCB. And that’s the promise I can give here. Not probably the orange cap, but I’ll keep turning up and keep trying my best. That’s it.”

RCB’s next match in the 2024 IPL will be against Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday, March 29.

PCB selection panel: Who is part of Pakistan Cricket Board’s new selection team?

PCB selection panel: Who is part of Pakistan Cricket Board’s new selection team?
Wahab Riaz - who will be part of the PCB's new selection committee

The PCB have introduced a new seven-member selection committee for the Pakistan men’s national team, which will include four former Pakistan Test cricketers.

The PCB chairperson, Mohsin Naqvi announced the makeup of the committee yesterday (March 24), during a press conference in Lahore. Seven members will make-up the committee, including former Pakistan players Wahab Riaz, Mohammad Yousuf, Abdul Razzaq and Asad Shafiq.

The other three members of the committee will be the captain and coach of the respective side being selected, potentially depending on the format, as well as a data analyst. Naqvi stated in the press conference that the appointment of a captain and head coach will be made public next week. Shaheen Shah Afridi led the white ball side on their most recent tour of New Zealand. The data analyst will be responsible for providing data to aid the committee in their selection process.

Naqvi said in a PCB press release: “I have mandated the seven-member selection committee, comprising of four former Test players, with the powers to select the national men’s teams for international cricket. I will not interfere with the working of the selection committee. They are experienced and professional in their domain and I am confident that they will do their job with dedication and honesty.”

Riaz, who played 27 Tests, 91 ODIs and 36 T20Is for Pakistan, the last of which came in December 2020, was appointed as the chief selector of the Pakistan men’s team in November 2023. His appointment came after a raft of changes were introduced following Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the 2023 World Cup.

Yousuf represented Pakistan in 90 Tests, 288 ODIs and 36 T20Is, in a career which ended marked with controversy in 2010. Shafiq announced his retirement from international cricket in December 2023, having not played for Pakistan since 2020. He was a core part of the Misbah-ul-Haq-led Test side of the 2010s which rose to the top of the Test rankings in August 2016.

Razzaq has previously been part of Pakistan selection committees, and played 46 Tests, 265 ODIs and 32 T20Is for Pakistan.

KL Rahul and Sanju Samson trade blows in T20 World Cup selection battle

KL Rahul and Sanju Samson trade blows in T20 World Cup selection battle
Samson Rahul battle for T20 WC

Sanju Samson and KL Rahul started their IPL 2024 campaigns with half-centuries, kicking off a five-, perhaps even a six-way battle for the wicketkeeper’s slot in the Indian T20I side for the T20 World Cup.

With the 2024 T20 World Cup to start a week after the IPL, all eyes will be on the performances of players in and around the periphery of their national T20I sides. India don’t have every spot locked down yet. Question marks dangle over the makeup of the top order, the seam attack, the spinners, and the most hotly contested role – that of the wicketkeeper.

In the third match of IPL 2024, between Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Super Giants, two of the senior-most contenders for the role came face to face.

Sanju Samson continued his trend of starting off IPL seasons on a bright note, passing fifty in his first match of the season for the fifth consecutive time. In response, his LSG counterpart KL Rahul also scored a fifty, although whether it had a positive or negative impact on his team’s chances in the game can be debated.

Samson’s unbeaten 82 off 52 took Rajasthan to 193-4. He hit six sixes in his knock that came at a strike rate of 158 as others batted around him. Rahul, on the other hand, had to arrest an early collapse as LSG were reduced to 11-3 in the chase. He first rebuilt with a 49-run fourth-wicket partnership with Deepak Hooda, before his 85-run fifth-wicket partnership with Nicholas Pooran brought LSG back in the game, albeit for a brief while.

Starting an IPL season with a bang is something Samson knows all too well. Carrying the momentum forward, however, is where he has almost always faltered. Since 2017, he has never had a season with a strike rate less than 135, but he’s also never had a season with more than 500 runs. In an Indian T20I setup that was, at least until recently, obsessed with volume of runs rather than how quickly they came, this high-risk approach hasn’t helped his case much. He hasn’t had regular chances, and when he has, he hasn’t made full use of them.

Since 2023, Samson has played nine T20Is, batted in seven of those, and only scored 78 runs at 13 and a strike rate of 126. Jitesh Sharma is the incumbent and Samson’s direct competitor. Like Samson, he has batted seven times since 2023 in T20Is; unlike him, he has struck at 147, albeit for only 100 runs. Whatever chances Samson has received so far, have been on the basis of his striking ability and not consistency, but he hasn’t been able to translate that into T20I hitting. To find a spot in the T20 World Cup squad, he’ll have to both level up his strike rate and the volume of runs this season in the IPL.

Rahul has not played a T20I for India since the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final. There were reports around him playing this season in the middle order to audition for a similar role in the Indian side. But he has started as an opener, which makes things interesting.

Rahul’s issues as a T20 batter have been exactly opposite to those of Samson’s. Season after season he has churned out 600 runs in the IPL, but since 2018, his strike rate has never ventured beyond 140. His knock against Rajasthan (58 off 44) was, in fact, the quintessential KL Rahul show where he gets set and leaves the acceleration for far too late, often leaving his team in a spot of bother.

In the IPL since 2019, Rahul has crossed 50 on 28 occasions, with 11 of those resulting in defeat for his team. Since 2022, he has scored three fifties while chasing. None of those has resulted in a victory for his side.

Given LSG’s abundance of openers, shifting down to the middle order could have made immediate as well as long-term sense for Rahul. It could have given him a chance to free himself up from the shackles of having to hold an innings together as an opener, and could have given him a better shot at making the World Cup side.

He may still move down the order, and if he does, it will level the playing field among all but one of the wicketkeepers competing for the World Cup slot – Ishan Kishan, who, by the way, didn’t help his cause by starting off with a duck against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad.

With comeback man Rishabh Pant and dark horse Dhruv Jurel also in contention, the battle between the Indian wicketkeepers can turn into one of the most exciting themes to watch out for in IPL 2024.
