Brian Charles Lara, the West Indian legend, was undoubtedly one of the all-time greats.

Up there with the likes of Donald Bradman and Sachin Tendulkar, what made Lara so special was the fact that his star shone even though he spent a large part of his career playing for a West Indies side that was not particularly strong.​

Lara, who turns 56 on Friday, played a total of 131 Tests and averaged 52.88. He scored at least one Test century against each of the teams he played against, giving him a full house of Test centuries against all the Test-playing nations of his day (Afghanistan, Scotland, and Ireland were not playing Test cricket when Lara was active).​

Let’s understand the catching efficiency of each of the 10 IPL teams – represented as a percentage, from best to worst. Read on for more.

1. Royal Challengers Bengaluru – 82.1% catching efficiency in 2025 IPL

It’s understandable why RCB might actually win their first ever IPL this season and remain firmly among the favourites to do this – they have been one of the best teams in the field.

With a catching efficiency stretching toward the mid-80s, Virat Kohli and company have been leading by example in the deep, behind the wicket and within the inner ring. At the time of writing, RCB had only dropped seven catches in this year’s IPL.

2. Mumbai Indians – 80% catching efficiency in 2025 IPL

Still in pursuit of a record sixth Indian Premier League title, Mumbai are relying on a complete approach, including fielding, not just batting and bowling.

They have some livewires in the field, including Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav, while even older veterans such as Rohit Sharma are holding their own. They’ve dropped eight catches this season.

3. Sunrisers Hyderabad – 76.9% catching efficiency in 2025 IPL

The Sunrisers Hyderabad are still looking to add to their one and only IPL title from 2016. It’s highly unlikely they will get that right this year, but they are still in with a chance of reaching the play-offs.

Besides their struggling batting, SRH can look at their poor catching effort. They’ve dropped nine catches, which is rather unbecoming of a fielding XI that includes Travis Head and other hotshot catchers.

4. Kolkata Knight Riders – 74% catching efficiency in 2025 IPL

They’re the reigning champions and looking for a fourth IPL to title, but the Kolkata Knight Riders are probably going to need an improved effort in the field if they want to go all the way again.

Names such as Sunil Narine and Andre Russell are big tickets when it comes to runs and wickets, but it’s catches they need as well. KKR have dropped seven catches in the 2025 IPL.

5. Punjab Kings – 72.5% catching efficiency in 2025 IPL

Like Bangalore, the Punjab Kings are also chasing a maiden Indian Premier League title. Having collected 13 dropped catches in the 2025 IPL so far, though, it’s going to take a lot more from them to remain in the hunt.

Captain Shreyas Iyer is going to keep leading by a stronger example here, trusting that Marco Jansen and others will follow suit.

6. Gujarat Titans – 71.9% catching efficiency in 2025 IPL

The Gujarat Titans won the IPL title in their first ever season, but have arguably gone a bit off the boil since. This year, at least, this can be put down to their difficulties with catching.

They have dropped 11 catches and have been close to shelling a few more. Their ground fielding has been solid enough, but really it’s when the ball’s been in the air that they have been challenged the most. The Titans have dropped 11 catches.

7. Lucknow Super Giants – 71.4% catching efficiency in 2025 IPL

With Mitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram, Nicholas Pooran and many other international figureheads in their ranks, LSG have put together one of the weaker fielding and catching displays in the 2025 IPL.

They are also looking for their first IPL title, but are not going to get it this year if they don’t pull themselves together in terms of catching. At the time of writing, the Super Giants had grassed 14 catches.

8. Delhi Capitals – 70.8% catching efficiency in 2025 IPL

Yet another team chasing a maiden IPL title amid the historical tournament dominance of the Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians, Delhi will demand better from themselves in the field from here on in.

Axar Patel’s team have had a few clangers along the way, spilling 15 catches. Mitchell Starc and company really need to be stronger on this front going forward.

9. Chennai Super Kings – 63.3% catching efficiency in 2025 IPL

It’s not looking as though CSK are going to record their sixth IPL title this year. They lost their captain Ruturaj Gaikward to injury for the rest of the tournament. He was one of their best fielders.

Ravindra Jadeja is reliable in the field. The arrival of Dewald Brevis could be a good injection, but CSK have a long way to go to make up for their 16 dropped catches in the 2025 IPL so far.

10. Rajasthan Royals – 62.5% catching efficiency in 2025 IPL

With 11 dropped catches, a high number of misfields, run-outs and other opportunities lost in the field, Rajasthan have been the worst fielding and catching team in the 2025 India Premier League.

Riyan Pirag and company will want to do better. England star Jofra Archer will insist on international fielding standards. Perhaps we’ll see significant improvement from them soon, even if a play-off berth is effectively out the window.

The West Indies all-rounder went from 13 May 2009, when the IPL was in South Africa, to 18 April 2015 with a half-century in the IPL. That’s pretty much a full six seasons.

He whacked 62 not out from 36 balls for the Chennai Super Kings against the Rajasthan Royals to end his IPL 50 drought. Rajasthan still won the match, though, as Bravo the all-rounder proved costly with the ball. The Windies star has since gone on to become a mentor in the IPL.

4. Wriddihiman Saha – 2,191 days from one IPL 50 to the next

From 4 May 2008 to 2 May 2014, India wicketkeeper-batter Saha went without a half-century in the Indian Premier League.

Saha hit two half-centuries and a century for the Kings XI Punjab (since renamed Punjab Kings) in that 2014 season.

His first 50 of the 2014 IPL was the one to break almost 2,200 successive days without one at all.

3. Travis Head – 2,516 days from one IPL 50 to the next

The hard-hitting Australia batter was without a half-ton in the Indian Premier League from 8 May 2017 to 26 March 2024. Head had a prolific IPL season in 2024 – it included four half-centuries and a centuries.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad superstar would have been pleased to break his 2,500-plus day drought during that season, when he was the highest run-scorer from overseas in the tournament.

2. Karun Nair – 2,520 days from one IPL 50 to the next

Nair continued his career without a 50 in the Indian Premier League from 21 May 2018 to 12 April 2025. Nair ended this long wait when he collected 89 for the Delhi Capitals against the Mumbai Indians.

He couldn’t convert this into a century and it was not enough to prevent defeat for the Capitals, but it was some personal consolation amd the collective loss.

1. Krunal Pandya – 3,269 days from one IPL 50 to the next

Pandya hold the record for the longest wait between IPL half-centuries. He went from 16 May 2016 to 26 April 2025.

He finally got this proverbial monkey off his back by hitting a match-winning 73 not out for the Royal Challengers Bangalore against the Delhi Capitals. He had Virat Kohli by his side for most of this milestone innings.

Raina was dismissed 170 times during his Indian Premier League career from 2008 to 2021. A whopping 30 of those times came via a run-out. He got out 15 times and his partner had to go the 15 other times.

The hard-hitting left-hander will be remembered among the Chennai Super Kings’ best ever batters, but also one of their worst communicators between the wickets.

4. Virat Kohli – involved in 31 IPL run-outs

Kohli holds many Indian Premier League records. He is the highest run-scorer in the history of the tournament, but also on this list of the five batters involved in the most run-outs in the IPL.

The run-outs cost him his own wicket nine times, but his partners have been dismissed on 22 occasions. That’s a lot of apologising between Royal Challengers Bangalore team-mates, indeed.

Dhoni has carried CSK to many IPL victories with big sixes and clever tactics, but also cost them a few results with poor running between the wickets. And, look, sometimes just really excellent fielding and throwing accuracy with direct-hits has got the better of him as well.

Sharma’s involvement in 37 IPL run-outs has seen him get out 11 times and his partners 26. On many occasions, this has happened at the top of the Mumbai Indians batting order, during the opening powerplay.

Punjab Kings set record by successfully defending 111 – is it the lowest successful defence in IPL history?

Tuesday night saw the Punjab Kings pull off a quite remarkable feat as they defended a woefully under par score of 111 to beat the Kolkata Knight Riders by 16 runs in a game that claimed the 42nd lowest aggregate score of all time in an IPL game.

Many of the games that make up that all-time low aggregate scores list are there because the team which batted first failed miserably, leaving the team that batted second with not much to chase. It’s much rarer for low aggregate games to feature a first innings total that was defended.

So, on the back of the Punjab Kings’ victory, which was secured by sensational spells from Yuzvendra Chahal (four for 28) and Marco Jansen (three for 17), let’s take a look to see how their effort ranks on the list of lowest scores defended in the IPL.

We won’t tell you where they feature just yet, but it’s safe to say that of the nine lowest scores defended, four of them were by PBKS — they’re clearly quite good at it.

9. Punjab Kings defend 125 for 7 vs Sunrisers Hyderabad (2021)

Played in Sharjah, this match was a masterclass in slow pitch defence. Punjab Kings put up a modest 125 with Aiden Markram’s 27 being the highest score.

It looked insufficient, but disciplined bowling led by Ravi Bishnoi (3/24) and Mohammed Shami (2/14) meant SRH never really got going. They ended on 120/7, giving PBKS a win by five runs and reminding everyone that T20s aren’t always about big totals.

Quite remarkably this defence saw Hyderabad run out of time and not wickets – when the game came to an end West Indian allrounder Jason Holder was at the crease, undefeated on 47 from 29 balls.

8. Mumbai Indians defend 120 for 9 vs Pune Warriors (2012)

A forgotten thriller from an IPL edition long gone, this game saw Mumbai Indians set a target of just 121. The legendary Sachin Tendulkar was the Mumbai Indians top scorer with a knock of 34 while there were also contributions from James Franklin and Dinesh Karthik.

The MI bowlers – led by Lasith Malinga and Harbhajan Singh – defended the score fiercely. Pune crumbled under pressure and could only muster 119, falling short by one run in a game that exemplified MI’s early reputation for pulling off scrappy wins.

The final over saw Pune needing 12 to win and 11 for a super over was bowled by Munaf Patel. It went for 10 (including a wide) as MI hung on for the narrowest of wins.

7. Sunrisers Hyderabad defend 119 for 8 vs Pune Warriors (2013)

Another Pune Warriors heartbreak, this time at the hands of Sunrisers Hyderabad. SRH’s 119, carried by one-season-wonder Biplab Samantray’s 37.

It was a total that was below-par, especially against a Pune lineup that included Steve Smith, Aaron Finch, Robin Uthappa, Mitch Marsh and Angelo Matthews. But a devastating spell from Amit Mishra (4/19), which included a hat-trick, turned the match on its head.

The Warriors were bowled out for just 108, handing SRH an unlikely 11-run win and helping establish the franchise’s long-standing reputation for defending tiny targets.

6. Punjab Kings defend 119 for 8 vs Mumbai Indians (2009)

Back in the South African edition of the IPL, PBKS managed to grind their way to 119 on a difficult Durban surface. Kumar Sangakkara’s 45 was key in helping them post a total with some fight to it.

In reply, MI’s chase never gained traction. Irfan Pathan, Yusuf Abdulla, and Ramesh Powar kept the pressure tight with only Proteas’ batsman JP Duminy really getting going as he made a well-played 59.

MI were strangled for 116, handing Punjab a nail-biting three-run victory – the first of many low-score defences in their history.

5. Sunrisers Hyderabad defend 118 all out vs Mumbai Indians (2018)

This game was a bowler’s dream. Batting first SRH struggled from the outset with Kane Williamson and Yusuf Pathan joint top scorers with knocks of 29 as they made their way to a score of 118.

Mumbai, chasing a small target at home, were left stunned by a clinical SRH bowling performance. Rashid Khan (2/11) and Siddarth Kaul (3/23) triggered a collapse that saw MI bundled out for 87 and handing SRH what on paper appeared to be the simplest of 31-run wins, but what in reality was one of the great IPL bowling efforts.

4. Chennai Super Kings defend 116 for 9 vs Punjab Kings (2009)

Held in Durban, this was a classic case of CSK clawing their way back from the brink. Batting first, they could only post 116 with Parthiv Patel (30) Suresh Raina (20) top scoring on a difficult pitch.

But Muttiah Muralitharan (2/8), Ravi Ashwin (2/13) and Raina (2/17) bowled with guile, stifling PBKS to 92/8 in their 20 overs. It was one of those early IPL encounters that showed Dhoni’s leadership and CSK’s ability to win ugly.

3. Punjab Kings defend 111 all out vs Kolkata Knight Riders (2025)

This week’s result enters the pantheon of IPL low-score defences. In a season where batting has generally dominated, PBKS crumbled to 111 all out after being put in by KKR. But what followed was breathtaking.

Chahal and Jansen bowled with venom and variation to strangle KKR’s chase. The target was small, but the pressure built relentlessly. KKR folded for just 95 – a testament to PBKS’s bowling discipline and mental strength.

This was the lowest defence of a score in a non-rain affected game. The games in positions one and two on this list were both shortened by rain.

2. Punjab Kings defend 106 for 6 vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru (2015)

In a rain-shortened game at Mohali, PBKS were forced into a 10-over shootout against RCB. They made only 106/6 despite Wriddhiman Saha’s 31.

RCB, packed with firepower, boasted a top three who probably couldn’t play in a fantasy team together due to budgetary constraints (Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers) were expected to cruise.

But Axar Patel (2/11) and Beuran Hendricks (1/9) had other ideas. Bowling with control and variation, they restricted RCB to just 84/6. A 22-run win in a 10-over game, this was one of the most unlikely defences in T20 cricket and showed how tight bowling can nullify even the strongest line-ups.

1. Royal Challengers Bengaluru defend 106 for 2 vs Chennai Super Kings (2013)

The gold standard for low-score defences. At the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, RCB managed only 106/2 from 8 overs in another rain-affected encounter.

Kohli led the way with a brutal and undefeated 56 runs from 29 balls while Chris Gayle weighed in with 28 from 13. In reply, CSK, with a stacked batting line-up of their own, struggled as Zaheer Khan found his areas immediately to take four for 17 in his two over spell. Ravi Rampaul added one for 20 to restrict Dhoni and company to just 82/6.

It was a 24-run victory in just eight overs — the lowest score successfully defended in IPL history (adjusted for overs).

He struck early and returned at the death to remove the tail, ending with 4 for 20 from his four overs. It was a vintage Boult performance: aggressive, accurate, and utterly destructive when it mattered most.

6. Rachin Ravindra (Washington Freedom) – 4 for 16 vs Texas Super Kings, 2024

India and England have played each other in 136 Tests since they first squared up against each other in 1932. Over the years many of the greatest bowlers of all time have featured in clashes between these two cricket powers.

Indeed, four of the top eight Test wicket takers of all time were either English or Indian. Now, as we prepare for a five Test series in the England summer, let’s take a moment to see which Indian bowlers have had the greatest success against England.

Ravichandran Ashwin stands atop this list, and rightly so. The premier off-spinner of his generation, Ashwin has taken more wickets against England than any other Indian bowler in Test history.

He’s been effective in both India and England — though more dominant at home – thanks to his ability to adapt. Ashwin, who has now retired, added tricks to his armoury over the years: the carrom ball, the slider, the floater — and he used them all with great success against England’s right-handed-heavy line-ups.

In 2021, he was instrumental in India’s home series win, taking 32 wickets in four Tests. His battles with England almost defined his legacy and with 44 more wickets than the highest ranked active player on this list, it may be a while before his record is broken.
