The 2023/24 Big Bash League will begin on December 7. Here are the BBL 2023/24 squad details, including full team lists and injury updates.

Big Bash League 2023/24 (stylised as BBL|13) will commence on December 7 with the usual eight teams, with a match between Brisbane Heat and Melbourne Stars at the Gabba.

The first stage of the BBL will be a 40-match league, where each team plays two teams twice and the other five teams once each. These will be followed by the Page Playoffs, followed in most franchise-based leagues around the world.

Rashid Khan and Harry Brook are among the prominent cricketers to have withdrawn from this edition of the BBL. The Adelaide Strikers have replaced Rashid with David Payne, while the Melbourne Strikers have brought in Liam Dawson, albeit for three matches, for Harry Brook.

There will be two new captains this time – Nathan Ellis (Hobart Hurricanes) and Chris Green (Sydney Thunder).

Ben Stokes has surgery in attempt to resolve long-standing knee injury

Ben Stokes has undergone surgery on his troublesome left knee and will begin a rehabilitation programme with the aim of being fit for England’s next Test assignment in just under two months’ time.

A chronic injury gradually worsened to the point of Stokes not bowling in the final three Ashes Tests, while he was selected as a specialist batter for England’s doomed World Cup title defence in India.

Stokes revealed earlier this month he intended to have an operation at the end of the World Cup in a bid to “get back to doing what I’ve been known for” and operate as a fully-fledged all-rounder.

He posted an image on Instagram of himself on crutches on Wednesday outside London’s Cromwell Hospital, alongside a short caption which said: “In and out. Under the (knife emoji) done. Rehab starts now.”

No timescale has been given for his recovery but Stokes is attempting to be back in time to captain England in a five-match Test series in India, which gets under way in Hyderabad on January 25.

Stokes confirmed last week he will not feature in next year’s Indian Premier League in an effort to manage his workload and fitness. He was released by Chennai Super Kings a couple of days later.

Uganda one win away from beating Zimbabwe to T20 World Cup qualification after win over Kenya

Uganda have put themselves in prime position to qualify for the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup with a 33-run win over Kenya in their penultimate match in the Africa Qualifier.

Having beaten Zimbabwe on Sunday (November 26), their latest victory means Uganda are just one win away from securing a place in next year’s tournament. If they beat Rwanda in their final match of the tournament tomorrow (November 30), they will join Namibia as the two teams to progress from the Qualifier.

Opening batter Simon Ssesazi scored 60 runs off 50 balls in today’s win, Dinesh Nakrani from No. 6 blasted 40 off 23 to set Kenya a target of 163 to chase. Bilal Hasan then took four wickets as Kenya were bowled out for 129, returning figures of 4-39.

While Uganda’s path to 2024 is simple if they beat Rwanda, they are not necessarily ruled out if they lose. Namibia have already secured qualification and sit at the top of the table on ten points. The only other teams mathematically capable of securing the second qualification sport are Uganda on eight points, who currently occupy the position, Zimbabwe who have six points and Kenya who also have six.

All of those three teams have one match left to play. If Uganda lose their match to Rwanda and Kenya and Zimbabwe win their final games, all three teams could end up on eight points. In that scenario, NRR would decide who finished in second on the table. Zimbabwe’s NRR (2.322) is significantly better than both Uganda’s (0.759) and Kenya’s (0.039).

If both Uganda and Zimbabwe lose but Kenya win, Uganda could still qualify. Kenya’s NRR means that they would require a significant swing in order to overtake Uganda, but not an impossible one.

All three of the final matches of the tournament will take place in Windhoek tomorrow (November 30).

Mohammad Amir rejects Mohammad Hafeez’s proposal to take back international retirement

Mohammad Amir has rejected the Director of Pakistan’s men’s cricket team, Mohammad Hafeez‘s proposal to take back his international retirement.

Before embarking on the tour to Australia, the newly appointed Director of Pakistan’s men’s cricket team, Mohammad Hafeez, held a press conference at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on November 28.

Among the host of topics Hafeez touched upon, one was that of left-arm seamer Mohammad Amir. Hafeez said that he reached out to the now-retired fast bowler and offered him to take back his retirement if he wished to play for Pakistan.

“I personally called Mohammad Amir and told him that if he wants to play for Pakistan, he is free to take back his retirement and get back in the system,” said Hafeez.

Hafeez added that he would have considered Amir for selection if he performed at the domestic level, but the left-arm seamer rejected his proposal hands down. “‘If you perform well, you will be selected in the Pakistan team. Once you come into the team, I assure you that you will be given equal opportunities like others.’

“However, he said that he has moved on in his life and his priorities have changed in life, which we have to respect. He said that he wants to play international leagues and does not want to go back to scratch [in domestic cricket],” said Hafeez.

Back in December 2020, Amir had announced his international retirement citing ‘mental torture’ by the team management. In a public fallout between Amir and the Pakistan Cricket Board, the seamer had given an interview on TV claiming that he was not wanted in the Pakistan team.

The 31-year-old has not played international cricket since then and has primarily plied his trade across domestic T20 leagues across the globe.

He burst onto the scene as a wiry 17-year-old quick who rattled the best batters in the world before getting embroiled in the infamous spot-fixing scandal which saw him get banned from cricket.

Amir made an international comeback in 2016 and was an integral part of Pakistan’s 2017 Champions Trophy triumph.

Stumping appeal reveals rare wicketkeeping no-ball to cost India in defeat to Australia

India were on the receiving end of another Glenn Maxwell heist as the Australia all-rounder blitzed a 47-ball century to help Matthew Wade’s side chase down 223 off the final ball of their run chase in Guwahati.

It was an eventful game with India opener Ruturaj Gaikwad going through the gears earlier in the piece, accelerating from 21 off 21 to a final score of 123 not out off 57 deliveries. India took 30 runs off the final over of the innings with Maxwell bowling it as a result of an injury picked up by Kane Richardson.

India looked to be on course towards a routine victory when Ravi Bishnoi snared the dangerous Tim David for a first-ball duck to leave Australia reeling on 134-5 in the 14th over bumping up the required rate to 14.50 runs per over.

Maxwell and Wade clawed Australia back into the contest but after Prasidh Krishna conceded just six runs off the 18th over, Australia still needed 43 off the final 12 deliveries.

The left-arm spin of Axar Patel delivered the penultimate over with Wade making the most of the favourable match-up to go from six off eight to 23 off 14. Wade’s first (and only) six came off the fourth legal delivery of the over – a free hit.

The previous delivery was thrown out wide by Axar. Wade looked to drive it through the off side but missed the ball entirely before Ishan Kishan whipped off the bails and appealed for a stumping. The ball was called wide but when the stumping call was sent upstairs, TV umpire KN Ananthapadmanabhan adjudicated that Kishan’s gloves were not entirely behind the stumps as he collected the ball. The on-field decision was subsequently changed from a wide to a no-ball, turning the following delivery into a free hit that was duly deposited into the stands by Wade for a straight six.

Five runs off the over’s final two deliveries (a tally that included four byes against Kishan’s name) left Australia requiring 21 off the last over which was to be delivered by Krishna. Wade hit the first ball over for four before getting the in-form Maxwell back on strike needing 16 off the final four deliveries. Maxwell then struck a six and three consecutive fours to register his fourth T20I hundred and take Australia over the line to halve India’s series lead with two games to play.

Watch: Ruturaj Gaikwad flicks ball from outside off-side wide line over fine leg for six

Ruturaj Gaikwad smashed Aaron Hardie for a third six in the 18th over of India’s innings in the third T20I against Australia, reaching a first T20I century off 52 balls.

Gaikwad teed off at the end of the innings in Guwahati, taking India from 155-3 at the beginning of the 18th over to 222-3 at the end of the 20th. At the beginning of Hardie’s 18th, Gaikwad was on 71 off 44 having just seen off Jason Behrendorff’s final over in an economical spell.

He smashed Hardie’s first ball straight back over his head for the first six of the over, before missing a wide which Hardie had to bowl again. His re-bowl was a short ball outside off, dispatched over deep midwicket for an even bigger boundary.

A four and a dot ball later, Gaikwad hit the biggest six of the lot. Hardie bowled full and wide on the off side, to which Gaikwad stepped across his stumps and powerfully flicked it behind square on the leg side, watching it sail into the crowd. Two off the following delivery completed a 25-run over for Hardie.

However, the worst was yet to come for Australia. After Nathan Ellis conceded 12-runs from the penultimate over of the innings, Glenn Maxwell was handed the ball for the 20th, having not bowled previously in the innings. Gaikwad dispatched him for another three sixes in the over, the first of which brought up his hundred, with two fours also making up a 30-run over.

Gaikwad’s innings was his second big score in a row for the series, he hit 58 off 43 balls in the second T20I on Sunday (November 26). His powerful finish left Australia needing to chase 223 to avoid conceding the series.

All ten IPL teams announced their lists of retained and released players on November 26. There were expected retentions and releases, as well as several unexpected high-profile releases like Wanindu Hasaranga, Jofra Archer, and Lockie Ferguson.

The drama around the retentions was heightened with the trades. In the most hyped trade deal in IPL history, Hardik Pandya returned to Mumbai Indians after leading Gujarat Titans for two seasons.

Where will the IPL 2024 auction be held?

The IPL 2024 auction will be held at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai. Last year’s mini-auction was held in Kochi, while the mega-auction ahead of IPL 2022 was held in Bengaluru.

When is the IPL 2024 auction?

The IPL 2024 auction will take place on December 19, on the same day as the senior India men’s team play an ODI against South Africa in Gqebera.

While the deadline for retentions has passed, the trading window is still open and will only close one week prior to the auction, that is, on December 12. Which means there’s still a chance for some reshuffling to take place in the squads ahead of the auction.

The purse for each team has been increased from INR 95 crore to INR 100 crore. Depending on whether they do any more trades or not, the purse remaining for each team will be adjusted accordingly ahead of the auction.

The exact time at which the IPL 2024 auction is scheduled to begin will be updated once it is known.
