Klaasen gives Tripathi death stare

Watch: Heinrich Klaasen’s brilliant effort to take a catch went in vain after a clash with Rahul Tripathi ended in the ball popping out of his hands during the Qualifier 1 between SRH and KKR in the 2024 Indian Premier League today (May 21).

Kolkata got off to a splendid start in the game, restricting Sunrisers Hyderabad to 159-10 after a three-wicket haul by Mitchell Starc. KKR, without Phil Salt, then made a convincing start with the bat, making 63-1 in the powerplay with the loss of Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s wicket.

Sunil Narine followed soon after but the duo of Venkatesh Iyer and Shreyas Iyer steadied the ship, taking KKR closer to the target.

SRH had a chance to dismiss Kolkata captain Shreyas on the first ball of the 10th over, when Vijaykanth Viyaskanth bowled a delivery around the off-stump, which Shreyas tried to scoop.

While he was able to get it off the face of the bat, he wasn’t able to direct it wide of the wicketkeeper. The ball hit Klaasen on the body behind the stumps and lobbed up towards square leg.

Both Klaasen and Tripathi, stationed at mid-wicket, ran full tilt to catch the ball. Klaasen reached first and pouched the ball safely in his gloves, but just as he was diving, Tripathi collided with him and ended up kicking the ball out of Klaasen’s hands as he fell on the turf.

Tripathi, not realising that the catch had been spilled, turned towards Klaasen only to be met with a death stare by the wicketkeeper, who was clearly frustrated at the missed opportunity.

After that, KKR took only another 21 balls to score the rest of the 53 runs as they won by eight wickets to book a place in the final of IPL 2024. Shreyas finished unbeaten on 58 off 24, scoring his second half-century of the season.
